女娲造人的故事最早见于《山海经》和《淮南子》。传说女娲先用黄土精心捏出富贵的人，累了之后就用绳子蘸泥浆甩出普通人——这也是"贵人""贱民"传说的由来之一。

The story of Nüwa creating humans first appears in the Classic of Mountains and Seas and Huainanzi. Legend says she carefully shaped the wealthy from yellow clay by hand, then, growing tired, flicked mud from a rope to create ordinary people, an origin myth for social class itself.

那天傍晚，小喜突然问了阿鸦一个很大的问题。"阿鸦，"她歪着头，认真地看着他，"人类是从哪里来的？"阿鸦放下手里的树枝，抬头望了望天空，沉默了很久。

One evening, Magpie asked A-Ya a very big question. "A-Ya," she tilted her head seriously, "where did humans come from?" A-Ya put down his twig, looked up at the sky, and was silent for a long time.

"很久很久以前，"阿鸦慢慢开口，"天地刚刚分开，世界上还没有人类。有一位女神，名叫女娲。她独自走在大地上，看着山川河流，觉得少了些什么……"小喜的眼睛越来越亮，悄悄往阿鸦身边靠近了一点。

"Long, long ago," A-Ya began slowly, "heaven and earth had just separated, and there were no humans yet. There was a goddess named Nüwa. She walked alone across the earth, feeling that something was missing…" Magpie's eyes grew brighter, and she quietly inched closer to A-Ya.

女娲蹲下身，捧起一把黄土，加入河水，慢慢揉捏。泥土在她手中渐渐有了形状——头、身体、手、脚……她轻轻吹了一口气……

Nüwa crouched down, scooped up a handful of yellow earth, mixed it with river water, and slowly kneaded it. In her hands the clay gradually took shape — a head, a body, hands, feet... She gently blew a breath onto it...

小喜屏住呼吸，追问："然后呢？然后发生了什么？"阿鸦却卖了个关子："别急，这才只是开始。"

Magpie held her breath and pressed on: "And then? What happened next?" But A-Ya only smiled mysteriously: "Patience — this is only the beginning."

她抬起头，看着满天繁星，忽然想起一件事："那如果女娲累了怎么办？她一个人捏得完这么大的世界吗？"

She looked up at the stars and suddenly thought of something: "But what if Nüwa got tired? Could she really shape a whole world all by herself?"
