Ancient Egyptians believed that after death, the soul underwent the Weighing of the Heart, presided over by Anubis. The heart was placed on one side of a scale, balanced against the feather of truth on the other. A heart heavier than the feather meant the soul would be devoured.

That day, Magpie found a wilted flower by the roadside. She stared at it for a long time, then asked: "A-Ya, what does it feel like to die?"

A-Ya looked quietly at the flower. "In ancient Egypt," he said, "there was a god whose job was to welcome every soul that died…" Magpie inched closer to A-Ya.

"Magpie," A-Ya lowered his voice, "the scale Anubis uses to weigh hearts is said to have never once made a mistake..." Magpie instinctively pressed her paw against her chest.

"What does it mean, to weigh a heart?" Magpie's voice tightened slightly.

A-Ya said slowly: "On the other side of the scale sits a single feather. And if the heart weighs more than that feather..."

A-Ya! Why does Anubis have a dog's head? Why did Egyptians choose a dog as the god of the dead?
More precisely, it's a jackal's head, not a regular dog. Jackals roam the Egyptian desert and often lurk near burial grounds. Egyptians believed they were guarding the dead — so the god of death took on a jackal's face.
📌 胡狼 (húláng) = jackal · 墓地 (mùdì) = cemetery / burial ground
🐦
What does weighing the heart mean? Can a heart speak?
Egyptians believed the heart recorded all a person's good and evil deeds. Anubis placed the heart on a scale against the feather of Ma'at — goddess of truth and justice. If the heart was lighter than the feather, the person was pure and could enter the paradise of the afterlife.
📌 玛亚特 (Mǎyàtè) = Ma'at · 羽毛 (yǔmáo) = feather · 来世 (láishì) = afterlife
🐦
What if the heart is heavier than the feather?! What happens then?!! (Magpie's eyes went red)
Thor slew the sea serpent Jörmungandr, but was struck by its venom and fell after nine steps. Odin was swallowed by Fenrir. But — after the battle, the world was reborn, new gods rose, and humanity survived.

"A-Ya," Magpie whispered, pressing a claw to her chest, "do you think my heart... is lighter than a feather?" A-Ya glanced at her. "You can't even bring yourself to step on a bug," he said, unusually gently. "You'll be fine."
