Have you ever noticed that when you look up at the night sky, almost every star slowly moves across it, except for one that barely seems to move at all, the North Star, also called Polaris. For thousands of years, from sailors at sea to caravans crossing the desert, countless people have used it to find their way, because no matter where you stand, once you spot the North Star, you know which way is north.
The reason the North Star appears to stand still is that it lies almost exactly along the extension of Earth's rotational axis. As Earth spins, other stars appear to move across the sky, but the North Star sits right near that axis, so it looks remarkably steady. Interestingly, the North Star is not a title that belongs to one single star forever, because Earth's axis slowly wobbles over thousands of years, a motion called precession, completing one full cycle roughly every twenty-six thousand years. So in the distant past and the distant future, different stars take turns holding the title of North Star.

Xiaoxi counted on her fingers and suddenly exclaimed in surprise, Aya, wait a moment, we seem to have told one hundred stories together!
Aya looked up at the night sky and said with a smile, that is right, one hundred stories, but look, that star up there has quietly pointed the way for thousands of years. Our stories have only just reached one small milestone along the road.
Xiaoxi asked curiously, what is that star called? Why does it never seem to move?
Aya said, it is called the North Star. For thousands of years, sailors and caravans have used it to find their way.
Xiaoxi pressed, so why does it always look like it is standing still?
Aya teased mysteriously, it has to do with the way Earth spins, and there is a secret, it will not actually be the North Star forever.
Xiaoxi asked in surprise, what? Someone else will take over as the North Star?
Aya laughed and said, that is right, tens of thousands of years from now, a brighter star will take over. The reason behind it is actually a bit like our stories, there is always a next journey waiting to begin.
Xiaoxi sighed, so the North Star also takes turns, does that mean our one hundred stories are really just a beginning too? A-Ya nodded and said seriously, exactly. Thank you to every friend who has listened all the way to this point, the hundredth story is not an ending, only the first stretch of a journey we have walked together. There are many more stars ahead, and many more stories, waiting for us to keep telling.
Did you know? The star we call the North Star today is not the only star to ever hold that title. Around three thousand years ago, the ancient Egyptians used a star called Thuban to find direction, and roughly twelve thousand years from now, the bright star Vega will take over the role. In other words, being the North Star is more like a position that gets passed along over time, rather than the permanent name of a single star.
