从今天起，小喜故事森林要带大家走进一片新的土地——非洲。在很长的一段历史里，非洲很多地方的故事并不是写在纸上的，而是靠一代代"说书人"口口相传，晚上大家围坐在篝火旁，由村里的长者讲给孩子们听。这些故事里，最常出现的主题之一，就是"诚实的人后来怎么样了""贪心的人后来怎么样了"。

Starting today, Xiaoxi's Story Forest is heading into a new land, Africa. For a very long stretch of history, many stories across Africa were not written down on paper at all. They were passed on by storytellers, generation after generation, told by village elders to children gathered around the evening fire. One of the most common themes in these stories is what happens to the honest, and what happens to the greedy.

今天要讲的这个故事，来自西非，属于一个流传很广的故事类型——一个诚实善良的女孩，在森林里遇到考验，因为老老实实回答问题、不贪心，最终获得了意想不到的礼物；而贪心又不老实的人，往往会因为自己的选择付出代价。类似的故事，在世界很多地方都能找到相似的版本，说明"诚实换来信任"这件事，几乎是全人类共同认可的道理。

The story we are telling today comes from West Africa and belongs to a widely shared story type: an honest, kind-hearted girl is tested in the forest, and because she answers truthfully and is never greedy, she ends up receiving an unexpected gift, while someone greedy and dishonest pays a price for the choices they make. Similar stories can be found in many parts of the world, which shows that honesty earning trust is a lesson almost the whole world agrees on.

小喜蹦蹦跳跳地问阿鸦："我们今天要去哪个新地方呀？"阿鸦张开翅膀，指向南方："今天，我们要飞到非洲的一片村庄，去认识一个叫阿玛卡的女孩。"

Xiaoxi hopped about and asked Aya, where are we going to a new place today? Aya spread his wings and pointed south, today we are flying to a village in Africa, to meet a girl named Amaka.

小喜问："阿玛卡是个什么样的女孩呀？"阿鸦说："她心地善良，说话从不撒谎。可是她的继母和继母的女儿，却总是又贪心又懒惰——这个故事，就从一次进森林打水开始。"

Xiaoxi asked, what kind of girl is Amaka? Aya said, she is kind-hearted and never tells a lie. But her stepmother and her stepmother's daughter are greedy and lazy. This story begins with a trip into the forest to fetch water.

小喜问："为什么每次都是阿玛卡一个人进森林打水呀？"

Xiaoxi asked, why is it always Amaka alone who goes into the forest to fetch water?

阿鸦说："继母总是把最辛苦的活儿都留给她。可是阿玛卡从没抱怨过，她相信，只要诚实待人，总会遇到愿意帮助她的人。"

Aya said, her stepmother always leaves the hardest chores to her. But Amaka never complains. She believes that if you are honest with others, you will always meet someone willing to help you.

小喜追问："那她在森林里，真的遇到了愿意帮她的人吗？"

Xiaoxi pressed, so did she really meet someone in the forest willing to help her?

阿鸦卖了个关子："她遇到的，可不只是普通人——森林深处，藏着一间会发出歌声的小屋，屋里摆满了会说话的葫芦。"

Aya teased mysteriously, what she met was no ordinary person. Deep in the forest hides a little hut that sings, filled with gourds that can talk.

小喜惊讶地问："会说话的葫芦？那她该选哪一个呀？"

Xiaoxi asked in surprise, talking gourds? Then which one should she choose?

阿鸦笑着说："这正是整个故事最关键的一步——选大的还是选小的，选吵的还是选安静的，答案会完全不一样哦。"

Aya laughed and said, that is exactly the most important moment in the whole story. Choosing the big one or the small one, the loud one or the quiet one, leads to completely different results.

阿鸦，阿玛卡走进森林打水，路上真的什么都没遇到吗？

Aya, when Amaka walked into the forest to fetch water, did she really meet nothing along the way?

当然不是。半路上，一只年迈的豹子挡在小路中间，开口问她："孩子，天都要黑了，你一个人不害怕吗？"阿玛卡老老实实地回答："害怕呀，可是继母在等水，我不能空手回去。"豹子听完，静静地让开了路。

Of course not. Halfway there, an old leopard blocked the path and asked her, child, it is nearly dark, are you not afraid to be out here alone? Amaka answered honestly, I am afraid, but my stepmother is waiting for water, and I cannot go back empty-handed. Hearing this, the leopard quietly stepped aside and let her pass.

森林里的老精灵们最擅长辨别谎话——后来继母的女儿也想走同一条路发财，遇到豹子却撒谎说"我什么都不怕，快点让开"，态度傲慢又不老实。豹子皱了皱眉，什么都没说，只是记住了这一点。

The old forest spirits are very good at telling lies apart. Later, the stepmother's daughter tried to walk the same path hoping to get rich too. When she met the leopard, she lied, saying I am afraid of nothing, hurry up and move aside, speaking rudely and dishonestly. The leopard frowned and said nothing, but it remembered.

找到了。屋里的葫芦们一个比一个大声："选我！选我！我是最大最重的！"只有墙角一个最小最安静的葫芦，什么都没喊。阿玛卡记得老妇人的提醒——真正珍贵的东西，往往不会大声嚷嚷。她轻轻抱起了那个最小的葫芦，回家打开一看，里面竟装满了金子和宝石。而继母的女儿抱回了那个最大最吵的葫芦，打开一看，里面窜出的却是一阵狂风，把家里的茅屋吹得东倒西歪。

She did. Inside the hut, the gourds shouted louder and louder, one after another, pick me, pick me, I am the biggest and heaviest! Only the smallest, quietest gourd in the corner said nothing at all. Amaka remembered what an old woman had once told her, the most precious things rarely shout the loudest. She gently picked up the smallest gourd, and when she opened it at home, it was filled with gold and jewels. The stepmother's daughter, however, carried home the biggest and loudest gourd, and when she opened it, a fierce wind burst out instead, blowing the family's hut apart.

Xiaoxi sighed, so the honest one was not just lucky, she kept making the right choices all along. Aya nodded, exactly. The true treasure is often hidden in the quietest, most unassuming place, not the loudest or the flashiest one, and that is a line worth keeping for anyone living life with care.

Did you know? The idea of choosing the small, quiet one instead of the big, loud one shows up in similar forms in folktales all around the world, not just in Africa. Many old stories in Europe and Asia also share this same motif, a plain-looking object hiding a real treasure inside. This shows that across many cultures, people share the same belief, that truly precious things rarely need to shout the loudest to prove their worth.
