The Aztecs believed the universe had gone through five sun eras, the first four each ending in catastrophe. To keep the fifth sun, the one we live under now, burning, they believed the sun god had to be fed through blood sacrifice, the cosmology behind their ritual practices.

那天正午，阳光刺眼。小喜眯着眼睛抬头看太阳，问："阿鸦，如果太阳消失了，世界会怎样？"

It was noon, and the sunlight was blinding. Magpie squinted up at the sun and asked: "A-Ya, what would happen to the world if the sun disappeared?"

"在遥远的中美洲，"阿鸦说，"有一个古老的民族叫阿兹特克。他们相信，我们现在的太阳是第五个——前四个，都被毁灭了。"小喜的爪子不自觉地握紧了。

"Far away in Mesoamerica," A-Ya said, "there was an ancient people called the Aztecs. They believed our current sun is the fifth one — the first four were all destroyed." Magpie's claws tightened without thinking.

"小喜，"阿鸦压低声音，"第五个太阳点燃的那一刻，天边其实飞过了一只乌鸦……"小喜瞪大眼睛，"是你吗？！"

"Magpie," A-Ya lowered his voice, "the moment the fifth sun was lit, a crow actually flew across the sky..." Magpie's eyes went wide. "Was that you?!"

阿鸦望着天边："点燃太阳，可不是随便谁都能做到的事……那需要一场巨大的牺牲。"

A-Ya gazed at the horizon. "Lighting the sun wasn't something just anyone could do... it required an enormous sacrifice."

小喜的羽毛一下子竖了起来："牺牲？是谁？"

Magpie's feathers stood on end. "A sacrifice? Who?"

To the Aztecs, sacrifice wasn't cruelty — it was responsibility. The gods gave their lives to ignite the sun; humans repaid that debt with blood. It was a sacred exchange, a cosmic contract.

Huitzilopochtli was the god of war and the sun. Every day he had to defeat the darkness and carry the sun across the sky. The Aztecs believed that if sacrifices stopped, the sun would cease to move and the world would fall into eternal darkness.

Quetzalcoatl was the god of wisdom and wind. He created humanity and taught people farming and the calendar. Interestingly, China's Nüwa also created humans. Creator gods across East and West both chose to care for humanity.

"A-Ya," Magpie whispered, gazing at the sun, "if the sun really was kept alive by lives given... does that make every ray of sunlight precious?" A-Ya nodded slowly. "So don't waste it."
