Indra's story comes from the Hindu Puranas. Interestingly, Indra is a title, not a personal name, a new Indra rises with every cosmic cycle, which is exactly the point of the parable that every ant was once a god.

那天，小喜看着自己在水洼里的倒影，得意地说："阿鸦，你说要是我是这个世界上最厉害的鸟，那该多好？"阿鸦叹了口气："你知道吗，有一个神，也曾这么想过。"

That day, Magpie looked at her reflection in a puddle and said proudly: "A-Ya, wouldn't it be amazing if I were the most powerful bird in the whole world?" A-Ya sighed. "You know, there was once a god who thought exactly that."

"小喜，"阿鸦轻声说，"你知道吗，在印度神话里，有一个天神叫因陀罗。他以为自己是宇宙最强的存在……直到一个白发小男孩出现。"小喜立刻抬起了头。

A-Ya said softly: "You know, in Indian mythology, there was a god named Indra who thought himself the mightiest being in the universe... until a white-haired little boy appeared." Magpie immediately looked up.

"小喜，"阿鸦压低声音，"那个白发男孩离开的那一刻，其实有一只乌鸦在宫殿屋檐上看见了一切……"小喜瞪大眼睛，"是你吗？！"

"Magpie," A-Ya lowered his voice, "the moment that white-haired boy left, there was actually a crow on the palace eaves who saw everything..." Magpie's eyes went wide. "Was that you?!"

阿鸦轻轻摇头："我看到的，是因陀罗脸上从来没有过的表情。"

A-Ya shook his head gently. "What I saw was an expression on Indra's face that had never been there before."

小喜歪着头："什么表情？是生气吗？"

Magpie tilted her head. "What kind of expression? Was he angry?"

A-Ya! The boy said "all the Indras" — what did he mean? Is there more than one Indra?

The white-haired boy told Indra: every time Brahma blinks, a universe is born and then dies. Each universe has its own Indra. Every ant crawling on the ground was once the Indra of some universe.

因陀罗当场愣住了。他突然明白——自己引以为傲的宫殿、权力、荣耀，在无限的时间面前，只是一粒尘埃。他放弃了建宫殿的执念，转而寻求智慧。

Indra was stunned. He suddenly understood — the palace, the power, the glory he was so proud of were nothing but a speck of dust in infinite time. He abandoned his obsession with the palace and turned instead toward wisdom.

那个孩子，是毗湿奴的化身。他用这个故事，让因陀罗从骄傲的天神，变成了一个谦逊的求道者。印度哲学认为，世界本是幻象——真正的智慧，是看穿幻象，找到不变的本质。

That child was an avatar of Vishnu. Through this story, he transformed Indra from a proud god into a humble seeker of truth. Indian philosophy holds that the world itself is an illusion — true wisdom means seeing through the illusion to find the unchanging essence beneath.

小喜低头看着地上的蚂蚁，看了很久很久。"阿鸦，"她轻声说，"如果每只蚂蚁都是因陀罗……那我是什么？"阿鸦也低头看了看，"也许，你是正在看蚂蚁的那个。"
Magpie stared at the ants for a long time. "A-Ya," she said softly, "if every ant was once an Indra... what am I?" A-Ya looked down too. "Perhaps," he said, "you are the one watching the ants."

The story of Indra and the ants comes from the Hindu epic Puranas, a classic allegory about "illusion" (Maya) in Indian philosophy. Interestingly, the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi expressed a similar idea — that a mushroom living only a day knows nothing of dawn and dusk, and a summer cicada knows nothing of spring and autumn. Different lives perceive time completely differently. Both Eastern and Western philosophy ask the same question: what is real?
