"A-Ya, A-Ya!" Magpie flapped over, eyes shining. "If I could do seventy-two transformations too, wouldn't that be amazing?!"

阿鸦头也不抬，"孙悟空当年也是这么想的。后来他大闹天宫，偷吃蟠桃、喝光仙酒，还把太上老君的炼丹炉踢翻了。"

A-Ya didn't even look up. "Sun Wukong thought the same thing. Then he stormed heaven, ate all the peaches, drank all the wine, and kicked over Laozi's alchemy furnace."

小喜倒吸一口气，"踢翻炼丹炉？！那玉帝没生气吗？！"阿鸦终于抬起头，"生气到派了十万天兵天将去抓他。"

Magpie gasped: "You kicked over the furnace?! Wasn't the Jade Emperor furious?!" A-Ya finally looked up. "Furious enough to send a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers to catch him."

小喜的眼睛瞪得溜圆："十万天兵天将？！那孙悟空打得过吗？"

Magpie's eyes went round as saucers. "A hundred thousand heavenly soldiers?! Could Sun Wukong really fight them all off?"

阿鸦耸耸肩："打不打得过是一回事，反正后来，天庭想了一个更绝的办法。"

A-Ya shrugged. "Whether he could win is one thing — but afterward, Heaven came up with an even more drastic plan."

他拜了菩提祖师为师，学会了七十二变和筋斗云——一个跟头能翻十万八千里。学成之后，他先是当上了花果山的猴王，后来觉得没有兵器，就闯进东海龙宫，找龙王要了一根定海神针，那就是后来的金箍棒。
He became a disciple of Master Bodhi and learned the seventy-two transformations and the cloud somersault — one leap covers thirty-four thousand miles. Afterward, he became king of Flower-Fruit Mountain, but felt he needed a weapon, so he stormed the Dragon King's undersea palace and demanded the Pillar that Calms the Sea — that became his golden staff.

一万三千五百斤，可以随他心意变大变小——想变成绣花针塞进耳朵里都行。有了兵器和神通，他胆子越来越大，闯进天庭，先是当了个看管马厩的小官，觉得受了侮辱，一怒之下反下天庭，自封"齐天大圣"。
Thirteen thousand five hundred pounds — but it could grow or shrink at his will, small enough to tuck behind his ear like a sewing needle. With a weapon and his powers, he grew bolder, stormed the Heavenly Court, was given a lowly post minding the stables, felt insulted, and rebelled, crowning himself the "Great Sage Equal to Heaven."

玉帝没办法，先是安抚他，请他去蟠桃园当差，结果他把最好的蟠桃全吃光了，还溜进兜率宫，把太上老君的仙丹当豆子吃了个精光，最后把炼丹炉一脚踢翻，扬长而去。玉帝这才真的怒了，派十万天兵天将去捉拿他。
The Jade Emperor had no choice but to appease him first, giving him a post managing the Peach Garden — but Wukong ate every ripe peach on the trees. He then snuck into the Tushita Palace and swallowed Laozi's elixir pills like beans, before kicking over the alchemy furnace on his way out. Only then did the Jade Emperor truly lose his temper and send a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers to capture him.

小喜张大了嘴，久久说不出话来。"阿鸦，"她终于开口，"那后来呢？十万天兵天将，抓到他了吗？"阿鸦难得地顿了顿，"抓到了。不过，那是下一段故事了。"
Magpie's mouth hung open, speechless for a long moment. "A-Ya," she finally said, "then what happened? Did the hundred thousand soldiers catch him?" A-Ya paused, unusually. "They did. But that's a story for another day."

Sun Wukong's story comes from the Ming dynasty novel "Journey to the West," one of China's Four Great Classical Novels. Interestingly, Sun Wukong may have been inspired by Hanuman, the divine monkey from the Indian epic "Ramayana" — equally mighty, shape-shifting, and able to fly. East and West may have swapped monkey-god legends long before we realized it.
