The "butterfly transformation" ending of Liang and Zhu is more than poetic fantasy — in Chinese culture, ever since Zhuangzi's "Butterfly Dream," butterflies have symbolized the dissolving of boundaries between life and death and the soul's ultimate freedom. Unable to be together in life, the two lovers become a pair of butterflies after death, using the gentlest of images to stage the most defiant rebellion against feudal constraints.
Interestingly, while both involve butterfly transformation, the Chinese story of Liang and Zhu emphasizes "flying together, never apart" — a symbol of reunion and eternal love. In Western culture, however, the butterfly (the Greek word "psyche" itself means "soul") more often represents the soul's own transformation and rebirth. One tragedy, two very different visions of what it means to become eternal.

Magpie pointed at the painting of two young students, curious. "A-Ya, isn't Zhu Yingtai a girl? Why did she disguise herself as a boy to go study?"
A-Ya sighed. "Because back then, girls weren't allowed in school. She studied alongside Liang Shanbo for three years, and he never once realized... she was a woman."
Magpie's eyes went wide. "So what happened after? Did they..." A-Ya paused. "Later Liang Shanbo learned the truth and rushed to propose. But—"
Magpie grew anxious. "But what? Just finish the sentence already!"
A-Ya said quietly, "When the wedding procession passed her grave, a sudden storm rose out of nowhere."
Magpie was already crying too hard to speak. A-Ya turned away, pretending to gaze into the distance. "W-what's there to cry about, it's just an old story..." But Magpie clearly saw — there was a faint glimmer of wetness in A-Ya's eyes too.
The butterfly-transformation ending of Liang and Zhu first appeared in Tang dynasty texts and evolved over more than a thousand years into the widely known tragic version told today. Interestingly, the butterfly ending was not part of the original story — early versions had the two turning into birds or simply being buried together. Only later did the more romantic butterfly imagery take hold, showing that folk tales keep evolving over time.
