Kuafu Chasing the Sun comes from the Classic of Mountains and Seas: Kuafu raced the sun, grew thirsty near Yugu, drank the Yellow River and Wei River dry, and died of thirst on his way to a northern lake. Before he died, he threw down his staff, which became a peach forest offering shade to later travelers.

Kuafu Chasing the Sun is often read as a tragic parable of persisting even when success is impossible, he could never catch the sun, yet he never stopped. It echoes Jingwei Filling the Sea, also from the same text: victory was never the point, what mattered was refusing to give up, a recurring theme in Chinese mythology.

Magpie stared at the painting of a giant sprinting under the blazing sun, curious. "A-Ya, why does he insist on chasing the sun?"

A-Ya glanced at it, hesitating. "His name is Kuafu... this story is actually a little heartbreaking, once you hear it."

Magpie tilted her head. "That is a little foolish... but he's running so desperately, it doesn't look like he's joking at all."

Magpie pressed on. "So what happened next? Did he catch up to the sun?"

A-Ya paused. "Right before he fell, he did something nobody could have imagined."

🐦
A-Ya, why does he insist on chasing the sun? What good would it even do if he caught it?
Legend says Kuafu wanted to see exactly what the sun looked like, so he kept chasing it, from the east all the way to the west. Just as he was about to catch it, he grew unbearably thirsty.
📌 追日 (zhuī rì) = chasing the sun
🐦
Couldn't he just find some water? Did he really have to get that thirsty?
He did — he drank the Yellow River and the Wei River dry in one go, still not quenched, and turned to run toward a great lake in the north, but collapsed halfway there.
📌 黄河 (Huáng Hé) = the Yellow River · 渭河 (Wèi Hé) = the Wei River
🐦
Why keep chasing something you can't catch? I think that's a little silly.
Silly? He knew from the start he could never catch it, yet he ran with everything he had until the very end — there's a spirit in this world called "persistence." It was never about winning, only about never giving up halfway.

Magpie nodded, half understanding, "Persistence..." A-Ya looked into the distance, "After he died, the staff in his hand became a peach forest, offering shade and fruit to travelers who came after him. Sometimes what one person could never catch becomes something another person can finally reach."

Fun Facts

Another tale from the same Classic of Mountains and Seas, Jingwei Filling the Sea, tells of a small bird carrying pebbles to fill the ocean, knowing full well the sea could never be filled, yet doing it day after day regardless. Kuafu dying while chasing the sun and Jingwei carrying stones to fill the sea look different on the surface, but share the same core: persisting even when you know you cannot succeed.
