The Odyssey tells of the Greek hero Odysseus, who spent ten years wandering the seas after the Trojan War before finally returning home: outwitting the Cyclops, escaping the sirens deadly song, and sailing between the monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis.

The word "Odyssey" itself later entered English as a common term for any long and perilous journey. Odysseus made it home not through brute strength but through cunning and sheer will, what set him apart from other Greek heroes.

Magpie stared at the painting of the stormy sea, excited. "A-Ya, let us go on a sea voyage too!"

A-Ya rolled his eyes. "You get so seasick you would throw up your own feathers, and you still want to sail? Speaking of sailing though, there is someone whose story is worth hearing."

Magpie pouted. "Hmph, then hurry up and tell me — whose story is it?"

A-Ya said unhurriedly, "His name was Odysseus. The war was over, and it should have taken him just ten days to get home."

Magpie blinked. "Ten days? So what happened?" A-Ya sighed. "Then he angered a god, and the road home became very, very long."

A-Ya, who is this person you are talking about? Did he really go through so many terrible things?
His name is Odysseus. After the Trojan War ended, he should have sailed home quickly, but his fleet wandered onto a strange island and ran into a one-eyed giant. The giant trapped them in a cave and ate two men every day.
📌 独眼巨人 (dú yǎn jù rén) = the Cyclops
🐦
Oh no! How did they ever escape?
Odysseus got the giant drunk, blinded his single eye while he slept, and hid among the sheep to sneak out of the cave. But escaping the giant only led them to the deadly song of the sirens waiting ahead.
(Sāi rén) = the Sirens
🐦
The sirens? What did they do?
Their song was so beautiful that sailors forgot everything and steered straight into the rocks. Odysseus had his men plug their ears with wax, but had himself tied to the mast just so he could hear how beautiful the song truly was, a curiosity that nearly cost him his life.

Magpie listened, spellbound, "And then? Did he make it home?" A-Ya nodded, "After ten years wandering through the Cyclops, the sirens, and far more dangers, he finally returned to his homeland. His wife had waited faithfully the whole ten years, weaving cloth by day and secretly unraveling it by night, stalling the suitors who wanted to take his place. When the two were finally reunited, all those years of narrowly escaping death seemed worth it."

Fun Facts

Interestingly, the sirens song later became a common English phrase as well, a siren song refers to something that sounds tempting but hides real danger, like a promise that looks wonderful but conceals a trap. Odysseus method of plugging his men ears with wax while tying himself to the mast also became a classic metaphor for knowing something is dangerous yet being unable to resist getting closer.
