In 1996, a farmer in Liaoning, China, discovered a strange fossil while digging, later named Sinosauropteryx, this was the first time humanity found evidence of feathers on a dinosaur. The discovery shocked the entire paleontology community, because until then, everyone had assumed dinosaurs were covered entirely in scales, with nothing to do with feathers at all.
Scientists now have a clear consensus: birds are actually direct descendants of dinosaurs, more precisely, they evolved from a group called theropods, the same group Tyrannosaurus rex belongs to. In other words, that little chirping sparrow outside your window is genuinely, by blood, a descendant of dinosaurs, dinosaurs never truly went extinct, they simply took on a flying form and are still living today.

Magpie looked at the picture of the dinosaur fossil, curious. "A-Ya, did not dinosaurs go extinct a very long time ago? Why are we talking about dinosaurs today?"
A-Ya paused, his voice sounding a bit strange. "Actually... dinosaurs did not fully go extinct. And the truth we are talking about today, it actually has a lot to do with me."
Magpie tilted her head. "Has something to do with you? A-Ya, are you about to tell me..."
Magpie's eyes went wide. "Don't tell me... you used to be a dinosaur?"
A-Ya cleared his throat. "To be precise, my ancestor was a very small theropod dinosaur."
Magpie finally stopped laughing and leaned in, "So A-Ya, are you basically a living dinosaur?" A-Ya was quiet for a moment, his tone suddenly softening, "In a way, yes. Dinosaurs never truly disappeared, they just learned to fly, and found a new way to keep living in this world." Magpie looked at A-Ya's folded wings, and suddenly felt that this crow who always acted so unimpressed by her was maybe not so ordinary after all.
Interestingly, Archaeopteryx, the key fossil that first proved the connection between birds and dinosaurs, was discovered in Germany all the way back in 1861, just one year after Darwin published On the Origin of Species. Scientists at the time described it as evidence the theory of evolution urgently needed, since it had both a reptile's teeth and tail, and a bird's feathers, fitting perfectly between the two.
