地球的外壳并不是一整块，而是由十几块巨大的岩石板块拼成的，就像一个裂开又拼起来的鸡蛋壳。这些板块漂浮在滚烫柔软的地幔上，每年只移动几厘米——差不多和指甲生长的速度一样慢。可就是这看不见的缓慢移动，在板块交界的地方挤压、拉扯、摩擦，才造成了地震，也在薄弱的地方撬开裂缝，让地下的岩浆找到出口。

Earth's outer shell isn't one solid piece, it's made up of more than a dozen giant rock plates, fitted together like a cracked eggshell put back in place. These plates float on the hot, soft mantle below, moving only a few centimeters a year, about as slow as your fingernails grow. But that invisible, slow movement is exactly what causes earthquakes where the plates grind and pull against each other, and what pries open cracks in weak spots, giving magma underground a way out.

当岩浆从地壳裂缝里喷出来，就形成了火山。环太平洋沿岸有一圈几乎连成整环的活火山带，科学家叫它"火环"，日本富士山、印尼喀拉喀托火山都在这条线上。1883年喀拉喀托火山爆发的声音，据记录三千多公里外都能听到，是人类有记录以来最响的声音之一。火山虽然可怕，但喷发后的火山灰也让周围的土地变得格外肥沃。

When magma bursts up through cracks in the Earth's crust, a volcano is born. A ring of active volcanoes runs almost all the way around the Pacific Rim, scientists call it the Ring of Fire, and Japan's Mount Fuji and Indonesia's Krakatoa both sit along this line. When Krakatoa erupted in 1883, the sound was reportedly heard more than three thousand kilometers away, one of the loudest sounds ever recorded in human history. Volcanoes may be terrifying, but the ash they leave behind also makes the surrounding land remarkably fertile.

小喜正在森林里晒太阳，突然感觉脚下的地面轻轻抖了一下，像是谁在地底下打了个哈欠。阿鸦飞过来，翅膀上还沾着一点灰白色的粉末，"你猜我刚才飞过哪里？那座山正在冒烟，不是雾，是真的在冒烟。"

Magpie was sunbathing in the forest when she suddenly felt the ground shake gently beneath her feet, like something underground had let out a yawn. A-Ya flew over, a bit of pale grey powder still clinging to his wings, "Guess where I just flew over? That mountain is smoking, not fog, it is really smoking."

小喜吓了一跳，"山怎么会冒烟？难道山也会生气吗？"阿鸦歪着头想了想，"要我说，这地面底下藏着的秘密，可比咱俩想的大多了。而且我还发现了一件特别有意思的事——跟火有关的秘密，东西方居然想到一块儿去了。"小喜的眼睛一下子亮了，"快说说，到底是怎么回事！"

Magpie jumped, "How can a mountain smoke? Is the mountain angry too?" A-Ya tilted his head, thinking, "If you ask me, the secrets hidden underground are way bigger than either of us imagines. And I found something really interesting too, a secret about fire, and somehow East and West both landed on the same idea." Magpie's eyes lit up at once, "Tell me, tell me, what happened!"

阿鸦压低声音，神秘兮兮地说，"猜猜看，今天谁的秘密先出场？"

A-Ya lowered his voice mysteriously. "Guess whose secret gets to go first today?"

小喜立刻追问，"是谁的秘密呀？快说快说！"

Magpie pressed at once, "Whose secret is it? Tell me, tell me!"

阿鸦笑了笑，"是掌管火的那两位神——东方一个，西方一个。"

A-Ya smiled. "The two gods who rule over fire — one from the East, one from the West."

地球的外壳其实是碎的，像摔裂又拼起来的蛋壳，一共十几大块，叫"板块"。它们泡在下面又热又软的地幔上，每年才挪动几厘米，比指甲长长还慢。

Earth's outer shell is actually broken, like a cracked eggshell put back together, more than a dozen huge pieces total, they're called "plates." They float on the hot, soft mantle below, only creeping a few centimeters a year, even slower than your fingernails grow.

慢是慢，可它们一直在挤、在拉、在磨。挤到实在挤不动的地方就"啪"一下滑开，那就是地震。要是刚好挤裂了一条缝，底下滚烫的岩浆就顺着缝往上钻，钻出地面，就成了火山喷发。

Slow, sure, but they're always pushing, pulling, grinding against each other. Where they get stuck and can't push anymore, they suddenly slip, that's an earthquake. And if that crack happens to split open, the scorching magma underneath drills its way up through it, breaks the surface, and that becomes a volcanic eruption.

你猜怎么着，还真不全是坏事。火山灰喷得到处都是，看着吓人，可它落到地里以后，过个几年，那片土地反而变得特别肥沃，种什么长什么。印尼有些火山附近的农田，产量比别处高好多，当地人都说，这是"火山送的礼物"。

Guess what, it's really not all bad. Volcanic ash gets thrown everywhere, looks terrifying, but once it settles into the soil, a few years later that land actually becomes especially fertile, whatever you plant just grows. Some farmland near volcanoes in Indonesia produces way more than land elsewhere, locals call it "the volcano's gift."

A-Ya smoothed his feathers and said slowly, "Have you noticed, both the Chinese and the Western world separately gave fire its own god, we have Zhu Rong over here, and the West has Hephaestus and Vulcan. Half a world apart, nobody ever discussed it with each other, yet everyone agreed fire was special enough that it needed a god in charge."

中国神话里的火神祝融，传说住在南方，掌管夏天和光明；古希腊神话里的赫淮斯托斯是锻造之神，在火山底下打铁，罗马人叫他伏尔甘（Vulcan），"火山volcano"这个英文词就是从他的名字来的。两边隔着几千公里、几千年，却都不约而同地把"火"和"神"连在了一起，你说巧不巧？🌋🔥

In Chinese mythology, the fire god Zhu Rong is said to live in the south, ruling over summer and light; in ancient Greek mythology, Hephaestus is the god of the forge, hammering away beneath volcanoes, the Romans called him Vulcan, and that's actually where the English word volcano comes from. Thousands of kilometers and thousands of years apart, yet both sides, without ever comparing notes, ended up linking fire and divinity together. Isn't that quite the coincidence?
