朝鲜半岛最古老的开国神话里，天帝桓因的儿子桓雄，带着风伯、雨师、云师三千部下，降临到太白山的一棵神树下，建立了人间的国度。当时山里住着一只熊和一只老虎，它们每天望着桓雄，心里都藏着同一个愿望——想要变成人。

In the oldest founding myth of the Korean peninsula, Hwanung, son of the Heavenly Emperor Hwanin, descended to a sacred tree on Mount Taebaek together with three thousand followers, including the gods of wind, rain, and clouds, and founded a kingdom on earth. At the time, a bear and a tiger lived in the mountains nearby, and every day they watched Hwanung, each secretly harboring the same wish — to become human.

熊和老虎鼓起勇气，向桓雄祈求变成人的方法。桓雄给了它们一把艾草和二十瓣大蒜，还立下了一个规矩：只要在山洞里待满一百天，期间不见阳光，只吃艾草和大蒜，就能如愿变成人。这个考验听起来简单，做起来却异常煎熬。

The bear and the tiger gathered their courage and prayed to Hwanung for a way to become human. Hwanung gave them a bundle of mugwort and twenty cloves of garlic, and set a rule: if they stayed inside a cave for a hundred days without seeing sunlight, eating nothing but the mugwort and garlic, their wish would come true. The trial sounded simple, but proved to be extraordinarily hard to endure.

小喜盯着画里那个黑漆漆的山洞，还有洞口摆着的一把干草和几瓣蒜，好奇地问："阿鸦，它们守着这些草和蒜做什么呀？看起来一点都不好吃。"

Magpie stared at the painting of a dark cave, with a bundle of dried herbs and a few cloves of garlic placed at its entrance. She asked curiously, "A-Ya, why are they guarding this grass and garlic? It doesn't look tasty at all."

阿鸦看了看画，说："这可不是普通的草和蒜，这是变成人的唯一机会。"小喜瞪大了眼睛："变成人？谁想变成人啊？"阿鸦指了指山洞深处两个模糊的影子："洞里那两位，已经憋了好些天了。"

A-Ya looked at the painting and said, "This isn't ordinary grass and garlic — it's the only chance to become human." Magpie's eyes went wide. "Become human? Who wants to become human?" A-Ya pointed at two blurry shadows deep inside the cave. "Those two in there have already been holding out for quite a few days."

阿鸦压低声音："规矩很简单——一百天不见阳光，只吃艾草和大蒜。可结果啊，不是所有人都撑得住。"

A-Ya lowered his voice. "The rule was simple — a hundred days without sunlight, eating nothing but mugwort and garlic. But in the end, not everyone could hold out."

小喜紧张地问："那……谁先受不了了？"

Magpie asked nervously, "So... who couldn't take it first?"

阿鸦叹了口气："洞里的两位，一个中途冲出去吹了风，另一个，硬是咬牙留到了最后。"

A-Ya sighed. "Of the two in the cave, one rushed out partway through for some fresh air. The other gritted its teeth and stayed until the very end."

阿鸦，一百天不见阳光，只吃草和蒜，这也太难了吧？换成我肯定第一天就受不了。

A-Ya, a hundred days without sunlight, eating nothing but grass and garlic? That's way too hard. If it were me, I'd have given up on day one.

老虎就是这么想的。它憋了没几天，就觉得又黑又饿又闷，实在受不了，一咬牙冲出了山洞，跑到阳光底下大口喘气。它的机会，就这么没了。

That's exactly how the tiger felt. After only a few days, it found the dark, hunger, and stuffiness unbearable, and finally rushed out of the cave, gasping in the sunlight. And just like that, its chance was gone.

熊也饿得头晕眼花，好几次爪子都伸到了洞口。可它每次都又缩了回去，就这么一天一天数着，硬生生撑满了一百天。

The bear was just as dizzy with hunger, and several times its paw reached all the way to the cave entrance. But each time, it pulled back, counting the days one by one, until it endured the full hundred days.

走出山洞的那一刻，熊真的变成了一位女子，大家叫她熊女。可她心里还是有个遗憾——她想有一个自己的孩子，于是每天跪在神树下祈祷。

The moment it walked out of the cave, the bear truly transformed into a woman, whom people called Ungnyeo. But she still carried one regret in her heart — she longed for a child of her own, so every day she knelt beneath the sacred tree and prayed.

桓雄被她的诚心打动，化作人形，与她结为夫妻。后来他们生下了一个儿子，取名叫王俭。这个孩子长大后建立了一个国家，就是古朝鲜——那一年，被后人称为"檀纪元年"。

Moved by her sincerity, Hwanung took human form and married her. Later, they had a son named Wanggeom. When the child grew up, he founded a kingdom — Gojoseon, the first kingdom of Korea. That year came to be remembered by later generations as the first year of the Dangi calendar.

Even today, mugwort and garlic remain very common ingredients in Korean cuisine, and many Koreans eat mugwort rice cake soup during winter — said to be a way of honoring the perseverance Ungnyeo once showed.
