精卫填海的故事出自《山海经·北山经》，是中国最古老的神话之一。传说炎帝有个小女儿叫女娃，有一天她去东海游玩，不幸被海浪卷走，再也没有回来。

Jingwei's story comes from the "Classic of Mountains and Seas", one of China's oldest myths. Legend says the Fire God Yandi had a young daughter named Nüwa, who one day went to play in the East Sea and was swept away by the waves, never to return.

女娃的灵魂没有消失，而是变成了一只小鸟，头上有花纹，白色的嘴，红色的爪子，叫声像在喊自己的名字"精卫"，从此人们就叫她精卫鸟。

Nüwa's spirit did not vanish. Instead, she transformed into a small bird, with patterned markings on its head, a white beak, and red feet. Its cry sounded like it was calling out its own name, "Jingwei", and so people came to call her the Jingwei bird.

小喜盯着画里那只小小的鸟，嘴里叼着一根树枝，正朝着一片望不到边的大海飞去，好奇地问："阿鸦，它这是要去哪儿呀？大海那么大，它衔着一根树枝干什么？"

Magpie stared at the painting of a small bird, a twig held in its beak, flying toward a boundless sea. She asked curiously, "A-Ya, where is it going? The sea is so huge, what's it doing with just one twig?"

阿鸦看着画，语气忽然变得不一样了："这可不是一只普通的鸟。它以前，其实是个小姑娘。"小喜愣住了："小姑娘？怎么会变成鸟呢？"

A-Ya looked at the painting, his tone suddenly shifting. "This is no ordinary bird. She used to be a little girl." Magpie froze. "A little girl? How did she become a bird?"

阿鸦压低声音："她本来在东海边玩水，一个大浪打过来，就再也没上岸。"

A-Ya lowered his voice. "She was playing by the East Sea. A big wave came, and she never made it back to shore."

小喜心里咯噔一下："那……她就这么没了吗？"

Magpie's heart sank. "So... she was just gone, like that?"

阿鸦摇摇头："没有。她没有认命，也没有离开东海——她做了一件谁都想不到的事。"

A-Ya shook his head. "No. She didn't accept her fate, and she didn't leave the East Sea — she did something nobody could have expected."

小喜追问："她一只鸟，能做什么惊天动地的事呀？"阿鸦只是笑了笑，没有直接回答。

Magpie pressed on. "She's just a bird, what earth-shaking thing could she possibly do?" A-Ya only smiled, and didn't answer directly.

阿鸦说："有人讲，那片海后来还跟她说过一句话，一句很不客气的话。"

A-Ya said, "Some say the sea later spoke to her — and it wasn't polite at all."

小喜追问："她听完怎么说？"阿鸦顿了顿："她没有生气，也没有放弃，给了一个让大海都没想到的回答——这个回答，一直传到了今天……"

Magpie pressed. "What did she say after hearing that?" A-Ya paused. "She didn't get angry, and she didn't give up. She gave an answer the sea never expected — one that's still remembered today..."

没有。她变成鸟之后，飞回了自己溺水的地方，盯着那片海，做了一个决定——她要把这片东海填平，让别人再也不会像她一样被淹死。
No. After she turned into a bird, she flew back to the very spot where she had drowned, stared out at that sea, and made a decision — she would fill in the East Sea, so no one else would ever drown the way she had.

对。她每天飞到西边的山上，用嘴衔起一根小树枝，或者一颗小石子，飞回东海，扔进海里，然后再飞回去，再衔一颗……日复一日，从不停下。
Yes. Every day she flew to the mountains in the west, picked up a small twig or a pebble in her beak, flew back to the East Sea, dropped it in, then flew back again for another one... day after day, without ever stopping.

大海确实这么说过。传说东海对精卫说："你就算干上一千年，也填不平我。"精卫回答："哪怕填一万年，我也要填下去，直到世界的尽头。"
The sea really did say something like that. Legend says the East Sea told Jingwei, "Even if you keep at this for a thousand years, you'll never fill me up." Jingwei answered, "Even if it takes ten thousand years, I'll keep filling you in, until the end of the world."

Magpie sighed. "She clearly knew she could never fill it up, so why keep going?" A-Ya nodded. "Persisting even when you know you can't finish — that's the real heart of Jingwei filling the sea. It was never about whether she could win. She simply never planned to give up."
