Susanoo is the god of storms and the sea in Japanese mythology. Because of his violent temper and the chaos he caused in his sister Amaterasu's palace, he was banished from the heavens. After falling to the human world, he arrived at a river in the land of Izumo and saw a pair of chopsticks floating downstream, guessing that people must live upriver.
He followed the river upstream and found an elderly couple weeping alongside their daughter. The couple explained that a giant serpent with eight heads and eight tails — Yamata no Orochi — came every year to devour one of their daughters, and the one before him now was the last one they had left.

Magpie stared at the painting of a giant, ferocious-looking serpent with eight heads, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what kind of monster is this? Why does it have eight heads? It looks terrifying."
A-Ya said, "This is no ordinary serpent — it's called Yamata no Orochi, and every year it devours a girl from the human world. This year's girl is the last daughter left in her family, with no one to take her place."
A-Ya lowered his voice. "Susanoo heard about this and came forward himself, saying he had a way to deal with the serpent. The girl's parents weren't sure whether to believe him."
Magpie asked eagerly, "What was his plan?"
A-Ya kept up the suspense. "First, he did something nobody expected — he turned the girl into a comb and tucked it into his own hair."
Magpie was startled. "Turned into a comb? So she's just... gone?"
A-Ya said, "Doing that was exactly how he protected her. The real plan for dealing with the serpent is still to come."
Magpie pressed on. "So what happened to the eight-headed serpent after that?" A-Ya smiled. "This time, it was in for a very different kind of prey..."
Magpie asked curiously, "Where did that sword end up?" A-Ya nodded. "Susanoo presented it to his sister Amaterasu, and it later became one of the three sacred treasures of the Japanese imperial family, called the Kusanagi sword. True strength isn't always about brute force — sometimes it's about seeing your opponent's weakness first."
Legend says the sword "Kusanagi", which Susanoo found inside the serpent's tail, remains one of Japan's three imperial regalia to this day. It is said to be kept at Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya and has never been publicly displayed in thousands of years.
