大禹治水的故事出自《史记》和先秦典籍，是中国最早的公共治理传说之一。上古时期，黄河流域洪水泛滥，庄稼被淹，百姓流离失所。尧舜先后命大禹的父亲鲧去治水，鲧用"堵"的办法筑堤挡水，治了九年也没有成功。

Yu the Great's story comes from the "Records of the Grand Historian" and pre-Qin classics, one of China's earliest legends of public governance. In ancient times, floods along the Yellow River basin submerged crops and left the people homeless. Emperors Yao and Shun in turn ordered Yu's father, Gun, to control the floods. Gun tried to block the water by building dams, but after nine years, he had failed.

鲧治水失败后，舜命他的儿子大禹继续治水的重任。大禹汲取父亲的教训，改用"疏导"的办法，带领百姓开凿河道，疏通河流，引导洪水流向大海。他还发明了测量地势的工具，规划了九州的河道系统。

After Gun's failure, Shun appointed his son Yu to take up the task. Learning from his father's mistake, Yu adopted a strategy of dredging and channeling instead of blocking, leading the people to dig new channels and guide the floodwaters to the sea. He also invented tools for surveying terrain and planned the river systems across the nine provinces.

阿鸦说："他叫大禹，正在治理一场持续了十三年的大洪水。这条河，他一挖就是十三年。"

A-Ya said, "His name is Yu. He is fighting a flood that has lasted thirteen years. This river alone, he has been digging for thirteen years."

小喜惊讶："十三年？那他家里人怎么办？"

Magpie was surprised. "Thirteen years? What about his family?"

阿鸦说："这正是这个故事最让人意外的地方。"

A-Ya said, "That's exactly the most surprising part of this story."

小喜追问："怎么意外？"

Magpie pressed on. "Surprising how?"

阿鸦说："传说他治水十三年，三次路过自己家门口，一次都没有进去。"

A-Ya said, "Legend says that in thirteen years of flood control, he passed by his own home three times, and never once went in."

小喜不解："那么近，为什么不进去看一眼？"

Magpie was puzzled. "So close, why not go in and take a look?"

阿鸦说："第一次经过时，他刚出生的儿子在里面啼哭；第三次经过时，儿子已经十岁了……他心里怎么想，谁也不知道，但这个选择，一直传到了今天。"

A-Ya said, "The first time he passed by, his newborn son was crying inside. The third time, his son was already ten years old... No one knows what he was truly feeling, but that choice has been remembered ever since."

他的父亲鲧治水九年，用堵的办法筑堤挡水，结果洪水冲垮堤坝，反而闹得更凶。舜就把治水的责任交给了大禹。

His father Gun spent nine years trying to block the water with dams, but the floods broke through and things got even worse. Shun then handed the responsibility of flood control to Yu.

他不再一味地堵，而是带人开凿河道，把洪水引导疏通，让它顺着河道流向大海。这个办法叫"疏导"，跟他父亲的"堵"正好相反。

Instead of blocking, he led people to dig river channels, guiding the floodwaters and letting them flow along the channels to the sea. This method was called "dredging and channeling," the exact opposite of his father's "blocking."
