库丘林的传说记录在中世纪爱尔兰的手抄本里，是凯尔特神话中最著名的英雄。他原名"塞坦塔"，据说是光明之神鲁格的儿子。七岁那年，他独自打死了铁匠库林家一条凶猛无比的看门恶犬，为了赔偿铁匠的损失，他主动提出由自己顶替恶犬看家护院——从此人们都叫他"库丘林"，意思就是"库林的猎犬"。

The legend of Cú Chulainn comes from medieval Irish manuscripts and tells of Celtic mythology's most famous hero. Originally named Sétanta, he was said to be the son of the god of light, Lugh. At age seven, he single-handedly killed the blacksmith Culann's fierce guard dog. To make up for the loss, he offered to take the dog's place guarding the house himself — from then on, people called him Cú Chulainn, meaning "the Hound of Culann."

As Sétanta grew up, he became the fiercest warrior in the kingdom of Ulster. Legend says that when he fell into an extreme battle fury, his whole body would shake and his face would twist beyond recognition, turning him into a warrior so terrifying even his own comrades couldn't recognize him — this state was called the "warp spasm." But in private life, he was someone who kept his word and valued loyalty above all.

Magpie looked at the painting of a boy holding a hurling ball and stick, standing before a large gate, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, who is this boy? What is he doing in front of this gate?"

阿鸦说："他叫塞坦塔，是阿尔斯特王国最有名的小英雄。这扇门，是铁匠库林家的大门——门后养着一条谁都不敢靠近的凶猛恶犬。"

A-Ya said, "His name is Sétanta, the most famous young hero in the kingdom of Ulster. This gate belongs to the blacksmith Culann's house — and behind it lives a ferocious guard dog that no one dares approach."

小喜担心："那他不会被恶犬咬到吗？"

Magpie worried, "Won't he get bitten by the fierce dog?"

阿鸦说："这正是这个故事最让人意外的地方。"

A-Ya said, "That's exactly the most surprising part of this story."

小喜追问："怎么意外？"

Magpie pressed on. "Surprising how?"

阿鸦说："恶犬猛地扑了上来，塞坦塔用木球一击命中，就这样徒手打死了这条谁都惧怕的猛犬。"

A-Ya said, "The dog lunged straight at him, but Sétanta struck it down with a single throw of his hurling ball, killing the fearsome beast with his bare hands."

小喜惊讶："那铁匠库林一定很生气吧？他最重要的看门狗没了！"

Magpie was amazed, "The blacksmith Culann must have been furious — his most important guard dog was gone!"

阿鸦说："塞坦塔做了一件谁也没料到的事——他主动向铁匠提出，由自己顶替恶犬看家护院，直到新的猎犬养大为止。从那天起，人们都改叫他一个新的名字……具体发生了什么，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "Sétanta then did something no one expected — he offered to take the dog's place guarding the house himself, until a new one could be raised. From that day on, people started calling him by a new name... but to find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

As Sétanta grew up, he became the mightiest warrior in the kingdom of Ulster. One year, every other warrior in the kingdom fell under a curse and could not move, but Cú Chulainn alone was unaffected — he guarded the border by himself, driving back countless enemies in duel after duel, protecting the whole kingdom for months.

But the moment he set down his weapon, he became Sétanta again, the one who always kept his word.

库丘林一生立下过很多誓言，其中一条是绝不能吃他名字所指的那种动物的肉，也就是狗肉。有一天，几位老妇人请他到家中做客，端上来的正是狗肉。不吃，是对主人不敬；吃了，就等于违背了自己坚守一生的誓言。库丘林想了想，最终还是伸手接过了那块肉——比起保全自己，他更看重心中的道义。

Over his life, Cú Chulainn had sworn many vows, one of which forbade him from ever eating the meat of the animal in his own name — dog meat. One day, some old women invited him to their home, and what they served was exactly that. Refusing would insult his hosts; eating it would break the vow he had kept his whole life. After thinking it over, Cú Chulainn reached out and took the meat anyway — to him, honoring his word mattered more than protecting himself.

库丘林打破誓言后不久，就在一场战斗中英勇牺牲了。传说他自知时日无多，便让人把自己绑在一块石柱上，站立着面对敌人，直到生命最后一刻都没有倒下。如今在爱尔兰都柏林的中央邮局前，还立着一座纪念他视死如归的雕像。顺带一提，库丘林这份"宁可牺牲自己也要信守承诺"的精神，和中国人常说的"一诺千金"，倒有几分异曲同工。
Not long after breaking his vow, Cú Chulainn died bravely in battle. Legend says that knowing his time was near, he had himself tied upright to a standing stone, facing his enemies, and did not fall until his very last breath. Today, a statue honoring his fearless final stand still stands before the General Post Office in Dublin, Ireland. By the way, Cú Chulainn's spirit of "keeping one's word even at the cost of his own life" echoes rather nicely with the Chinese saying "a promise is worth a thousand pieces of gold."

The legend of Cú Chulainn is mainly recorded in an epic called the Táin Bó Cúailnge, Ireland's oldest and longest heroic tale. Its earliest surviving manuscript dates back to the 12th century and is still preserved today in an ancient text called the Book of the Dun Cow, held at Trinity College Library in Dublin. These stories were originally passed down orally by generations of storytellers until medieval monks wrote them down, allowing us to still read this Celtic hero's legend today.
