As a boy, Fionn studied by the River Boyne under a druid teacher named Finn Eces. The druid had long dreamed of catching the legendary Salmon of Knowledge, said to grant all the wisdom in the world to whoever ate it. He had waited by the river for this salmon for a full seven years.

终于有一天，师傅成功钓到了这条鲑鱼！他欣喜若狂，让芬恩负责把鱼烤熟，却严肃地叮嘱他："这条鱼一口都不能吃，一定要记住。"

One day, the druid finally caught the salmon! He was overjoyed and asked young Fionn to cook the fish for him, but warned him sternly, "You must not eat even a single bite of this fish. Remember that."

小喜看着画里一个男孩正在烤一条闪闪发光的鱼，好奇地问："阿鸦，这条鱼看起来好特别呀，它有什么不一样吗？"

Magpie looked at the painting of a boy roasting a shimmering fish, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, this fish looks so special, is there something different about it?"

阿鸦说："这条鱼叫智慧鲑鱼，据说吃了它，就能获得世间所有的智慧。这个男孩叫芬恩，他师傅严令他一口都不能吃。"

A-Ya said, "This fish is called the Salmon of Knowledge. Legend says whoever eats it gains all the wisdom in the world. This boy is Fionn, and his teacher strictly forbade him from eating even a single bite."

小喜惊讶："那他会不会忍不住偷偷尝一口呀？"

Magpie was amazed, "Won't he be tempted to sneak a bite?"

阿鸦说："这正是这个故事最让人意外的地方。"

A-Ya said, "That's exactly the most surprising part of this story."

Magpie pressed on. "Surprising how?"

阿鸦说："芬恩确实没有偷吃一口，可就在烤鱼的时候，发生了一件他完全没料到的事。"

A-Ya said, "Fionn really didn't sneak a bite — but while roasting the fish, something happened that he never expected."

小喜好奇："发生了什么呀？"

Magpie was curious, "What happened?"

阿鸦说："他被鱼皮溅起的热油烫到了拇指，做了一个谁都会做的本能动作……具体发生了什么，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "A splash of hot oil from the fish's skin burned his thumb, and he did something completely instinctive... but to find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

芬恩想都没想，本能地把烫伤的拇指放进了嘴里吸吮——就这样，他意外地尝到了鲑鱼皮上的一滴油脂。他愣住了，因为一股奇妙的感觉突然涌上心头，他好像瞬间就明白了很多以前不懂的事情。

Without thinking, Fionn instinctively put his burned thumb into his mouth — and just like that, he accidentally tasted a drop of oil from the salmon's skin. He froze, because a strange feeling suddenly washed over him, as if he had instantly come to understand many things he never had before.

Fionn was completely honest and told his teacher exactly what had happened. Hearing this, the druid's face showed both shock and admiration — the wisdom he had waited seven years for had ended up, by pure accident, going to his own student instead.

Instead of getting angry, the teacher said this must have been destined to happen, and told Fionn to eat the rest of the salmon. From that day on, whenever Fionn gently bit his thumb, he could foresee the future and see through the truth of things, becoming one of Ireland's wisest heroes.

The legend of Fionn and the Salmon of Knowledge is mainly recorded in the medieval Irish manuscript collection known as the Macgnímartha Finn, the most widely told origin story in the Fionn mac Cumhaill hero cycle. The story remains closely tied to the real geography of Ireland's Boyne Valley — ancient sites there, such as Newgrange, predate the Egyptian pyramids by several centuries and remain among Ireland's most important archaeological treasures today.
