上古苏美尔的基什城有一位国王，名叫埃塔纳，深受百姓爱戴，唯独一件事让他发愁——他和王后一直没有孩子。祭司告诉他，只有找到天上生长的一株"生育之草"，才能让王后怀上孩子。

In ancient Sumer, the city of Kish had a king named Etana, beloved by his people, but troubled by one thing — he and his queen had no children. The priests told him that only a magical plant of birth, growing in the heavens, could help the queen conceive.

埃塔纳向太阳神沙玛什祈求帮助。沙玛什告诉他，附近的深坑里困着一只受伤的老鹰，如果埃塔纳愿意救它，老鹰或许能帮他飞上天空，找到那株珍贵的仙草。

Etana prayed to the sun god Shamash for help. Shamash told him that a wounded eagle was trapped in a deep pit nearby, and if Etana was willing to save it, the eagle might be able to carry him up to the sky to find that precious plant.

小喜看着画里一位国王正在深坑边喂食一只受伤的老鹰，好奇地问："阿鸦，这位国王在做什么呀？为什么要喂一只老鹰呢？"

Magpie looked at the painting of a king feeding a wounded eagle at the edge of a deep pit, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what is this king doing? Why is he feeding an eagle?"

阿鸦说："这位国王叫埃塔纳，他一直没有孩子，天神告诉他，只有找到天上的仙草才能求子。而这只老鹰，或许能帮他一个大忙。"

A-Ya said, "This king is named Etana. He had no children, and the gods told him that only a magical plant in the sky could help. This eagle might be able to do him a great favor."

小喜惊讶："一只受伤的老鹰，能帮上什么忙呀？"

Magpie was amazed, "How could a wounded eagle possibly help?"

阿鸦说："这正是这个故事最让人意外的地方。"

A-Ya said, "That's exactly the most surprising part of this story."

小喜追问："怎么意外？"

Magpie pressed on. "Surprising how?"

阿鸦说："埃塔纳耐心地照顾老鹰，喂它吃的，直到它的伤完全好了。"

A-Ya said, "Etana patiently cared for the eagle, feeding it, until its wound was completely healed."

小喜好奇："老鹰伤好了之后，会怎么报答国王呢？"

Magpie was curious, "How will the eagle repay the king once it heals?"

阿鸦说："老鹰做了一件谁都没想到的事——它张开翅膀，邀请埃塔纳骑在自己背上，一起飞向了从没有人去过的地方……具体发生了什么，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "The eagle did something no one expected — it spread its wings and invited Etana to ride on its back, flying together to a place no one had ever been... but to find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

老鹰展开巨大的翅膀，载着埃塔纳一飞冲天。越飞越高，地面上的城市渐渐变成了一个小点，田野和河流像画在地毯上的图案一样，越来越模糊。

The eagle spread its enormous wings and carried Etana soaring into the sky. The higher they flew, the smaller the city below became, until it was just a tiny dot, and the fields and rivers looked like patterns woven into a distant carpet, growing fainter and fainter.

As they climbed higher and higher, Etana began to feel a flicker of fear — the earth had shrunk to the size of a small flatbread, and all around them was nothing but endless cloud and mist. He couldn't help asking the eagle, "Could we fly a little lower?" The eagle slowed down and circled steadily among the clouds.

Among the clouds, Etana saw a sight no one had ever witnessed before — sunlight pierced through the sea of clouds, casting a golden glow, and the sky stretched so vast that it made him forget his fear. The eagle carried him higher still, searching for that precious plant of birth, and Etana knew in his heart that this journey would be told and retold for generations to come.

Magpie said in amazement, "Riding an eagle up into the clouds must have felt absolutely amazing!" A-Ya nodded. "It is, and the bond between Etana and the eagle is really touching too — he patiently saved the wounded eagle first, and only then was the eagle willing to carry him on a journey no one else had ever taken. That might just be the best reward for kindness."

Archaeologists discovered an image depicting Etana flying on the eagle's back carved onto a Mesopotamian cylinder seal dating back to around 2300 BCE, believed to be one of the earliest known artworks portraying human flight. This "Etana Seal" is now held at the British Museum, predating Leonardo da Vinci's flying machine sketches by nearly four thousand years.
