Long ago, the Yellow Emperor had an official named Cangjie, whose job was to record everything important happening in the tribe. Back then, there was no writing yet, so people could only tie knots in ropes to keep records — a big knot for a big event, a small knot for a small one.
But as the tribe grew, there were simply too many things happening to keep track of with knots alone, and Cangjie often worried about this. One day, he followed a hunter up the mountain and saw the hunter identify which animal had passed just by looking at its footprints — an idea suddenly sparked in Cangjie's mind.

Magpie looked at the painting of an ancient man frowning at a knotted rope, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what is he doing? There are so many knots on that rope."
A-Ya said, "His name is Cangjie, an official under the Yellow Emperor in charge of record-keeping. But as the tribe grew, there were simply too many things happening to keep track of with knots alone."
Magpie was amazed, "What can he do then? He can't just keep tying knots forever, right?"
A-Ya said, "That's exactly the most surprising part of this story."
Magpie pressed on. "Surprising how?"
A-Ya said, "Cangjie was worried too, until one day he followed a hunter up the mountain, and saw something that truly astonished him."
Magpie was curious, "What did the hunter do?"
A-Ya said, "The hunter just glanced at the footprints on the ground and knew exactly which animal had passed by — and a remarkable idea suddenly sparked in Cangjie's mind... but to find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."
Magpie said in amazement, "So the characters we write today all started with Cangjie looking at footprints!" A-Ya nodded. "That's right, and it's because of writing that we can still read stories from thousands of years ago today. Even you and I, telling stories and learning Chinese and English together like this, are in a way carrying on Cangjie's gift."
The legend of Cangjie creating writing was first recorded in ancient Chinese texts such as Xu Shen's Shuowen Jiezi from the Eastern Han dynasty and the Huainanzi. Today, in Baishui County, Shaanxi Province, a real Cangjie Temple and Cangjie Tomb still stand, having been continuously honored for over two thousand years, and remain an important site where Chinese people from around the world come to trace their roots and commemorate the origin of Chinese characters.
