Deep in the rainforests of Mesoamerica, the Maya people passed down an ancient sacred book called the Popol Vuh. It tells the story of a pair of hero twins who didn't win through brute strength, but through cleverness — outsmarting trial after trial in a shadowy underworld.

冥界的主宰嫉妒地面上的人太快乐了，总想找茬。双胞胎的父辈曾经去过那里，后来兄弟俩收到了黑暗世界送来的邀请信，决心要争一口气，替家族证明自己。

The lords of the underworld envied how happy people were on the surface, and always looked for trouble. The twins' elders had gone there before them, and when the brothers received an invitation from the underworld, they decided to prove themselves and stand up for their family.

Magpie saw two identical figures carved into the stone, holding strange bat-like paddles, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, who are these two people?"

阿鸦说："他们是玛雅传说《波波尔·乌》里最出名的一对双胞胎兄弟，据说曾经去过一个连太阳都照不到的地方，而且——活着回来了。"

A-Ya said, "They're the most famous twin brothers from the Maya legend Popol Vuh. Legend says they once went somewhere the sun never reaches — and came back alive."

小喜惊讶："连太阳都照不到的地方？那是哪里呀？"

Magpie was amazed, "A place the sun never reaches? Where is that?"

阿鸦说："那是黑暗世界的入口，专门用来考验闯入者的地方。进去的人，几乎没有活着出来的。"

A-Ya said, "That's the entrance to the underworld — a place built entirely to test intruders. Almost no one who enters ever comes out alive."

小喜追问："那双胞胎带了什么厉害的武器吗？"

Magpie pressed on, "Did the twins bring some powerful weapon?"

阿鸦说："没有武器，他们带的是一肚子的鬼点子。黑暗世界派使者送来邀请信的那天，兄弟俩心里其实也很清楚——这次凶多吉少。"

A-Ya said, "No weapon at all — just a head full of clever tricks. The day the underworld's messengers delivered the invitation, the brothers knew full well the odds were against them."

小喜好奇："那他们最后是怎么活下来的呀？"

Magpie was curious, "So how did they end up surviving?"

阿鸦说："黑暗世界给他们设了好几道关卡，一道比一道凶险。兄弟俩到底是怎么一关一关闯过去的呢？具体发生了什么，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "The underworld set trial after trial for them, each more dangerous than the last. How exactly did the brothers make it through, one trial at a time? To find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

The lords of the underworld envied how happy people were on the surface, and always looked for trouble. Once the brothers received the invitation, they set off without looking back — they knew the journey was dangerous, but they wanted to prove themselves for their family.

第一道关卡叫"夜之屋"，要求他们一整晚不能让火把熄灭，否则就输了。兄弟俩灵机一动，抓了几只萤火虫绑在火把顶端，远远看去像是火苗还在跳动，其实真正的火早就灭了，考官们愣是没看出破绽。

The first trial was called the "House of Night" — they had to keep a torch burning all night, or they'd lose. The brothers had a clever idea: they caught a few fireflies and tied them to the top of the torch. From a distance it looked like the flame was still flickering, though the real fire had gone out long ago. The judges never noticed a thing.

So how did they finally beat the underworld in the end?

黑暗世界的主宰约他们进行一场球场比赛，想用蛮力压倒兄弟俩。可双胞胎早就看穿了对手的招数，一次次用计谋化解攻势，最后凭着配合和智慧赢得了比赛。赢得比赛后，兄弟俩没有留在黑暗世界，而是一起飞上了天空——一个变成了太阳，一个变成了月亮，从此永远守护着大地上的人们。

The lords challenged them to a ballgame, hoping brute force would crush the brothers. But the twins had already seen through their tricks, countering again and again with clever strategy, and in the end teamwork and wit won them the game. After winning, the brothers didn't stay in the underworld — they rose together into the sky. One became the sun, the other the moon, forever watching over the people below.

The Popol Vuh is one of the few surviving original Maya mythological texts. It was discovered and translated by Spanish friar Francisco Ximénez in the early 18th century, which is how this ancient story survives to this day.
