Across the vast islands of the Pacific, the Māori people passed down a legend about Maui. He was the youngest of his brothers, small and often dismissed as "not much use." But no one expected that this unassuming youngest brother would go on to do something his whole people would be grateful for, generation after generation.
Back then, the sun raced across the sky so fast that the days were painfully short. Crops didn't get enough sunlight before night fell, and there was never enough time to get things done. Maui saw this, and decided he would find a way to make the sun "slow down."

Magpie looked at the painting of someone pulling desperately on a rope, the other end tied to a giant ball of fire, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, is he having a tug-of-war with the sun?"
A-Ya said, "That's pretty much it! This is Maui, the most famous hero from Māori legend. He really did once take on the sun — and won."
Magpie was amazed, "Take on the sun? Isn't he just an ordinary person?"
A-Ya said, "Maui was the youngest and smallest of his brothers, who never took him seriously. But this time, he made a decision none of his brothers ever expected."
Magpie pressed on, "What decision?"
A-Ya said, "Back then, the sun raced across the sky so fast that the days were painfully short, and there was never enough time to get things done. Maui decided he would find a way to make the sun 'slow down.'"
Magpie was curious, "How could he possibly stop the sun all by himself?"
A-Ya said, "He certainly didn't plan to do it alone — but to find out what happened next, we have to start from the day Maui convinced his brothers to help."
Magpie sighed, "So Maui was so small, yet he pulled off something so huge!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right — no matter how small one person's strength is, with a clever mind and the help of others working together, even the rules of the whole world can change."
