In Polynesian tradition, bark cloth making is an ancient craft passed down for thousands of years — people strip bark from certain trees and pound it over and over until it becomes soft yet sturdy enough to be made into clothing and blankets. Hina is a legendary figure known for her skilled hands, and the bark cloth she made was said to be the finest on the whole island.

捶打树皮布是件极其需要耐心的活，得把树皮泡软，再一遍遍捶打，敲得越久布越细越软。做一件像样的布，往往要连续敲上好几天，一点都不能急，是一门真正考验专注力的传统手艺。

Making bark cloth requires enormous patience — the bark must be soaked soft, then pounded again and again, growing finer and softer the longer one works. Making a proper piece often takes several days of continuous, unhurried effort, making it a traditional craft that truly tests one's focus.

小喜看到画里一位女子坐在月亮上，怀里放着树皮布，正拿着木槌捶打，好奇地问："阿鸦，她怎么跑到月亮上去捶布了呀？"

Magpie saw a painting of a woman sitting on the moon, a piece of bark cloth in her lap, striking it with a mallet, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, why is she up on the moon making bark cloth?"

阿鸦说："这就是希纳，波利尼西亚传说里最出名的巧手女人。她本来是在人间捶布的，后来发生了一件事，让她做了一个谁也没想到的决定。"

A-Ya said, "That's Hina, the most famous skilled craftswoman in Polynesian legend. She used to make bark cloth down on earth — but something happened that led her to make a decision no one saw coming."

小喜惊讶："什么事呀？"

Magpie was amazed, "What happened?"

阿鸦说："希纳捶布的手艺全岛最好，可白天村里孩子闹、牲畜叫，她的活总是被打断，一不小心就前功尽弃。"

A-Ya said, "Hina's bark cloth was the finest on the island, but during the day the village was full of noisy children and animals, and her work kept getting interrupted — sometimes ruining days of effort in an instant."

小喜追问："那她怎么办呀？"

Magpie pressed on, "So what did she do?"

阿鸦说："有一天晚上，发生了一件让她特别委屈的事，她抬头看见天上的月亮，心里冒出了一个念头。"

A-Ya said, "One night, something happened that left her feeling deeply upset. She looked up at the moon, and an idea began to form in her mind."

小喜好奇："什么念头呀？"

Magpie was curious, "What idea?"

阿鸦说："她做了一个大胆的决定——具体发生了什么、她最后有没有成功，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "She made a bold decision — but to find out exactly what happened, and whether she succeeded, we'll have to start from the beginning."

希纳每天的工作，就是把树皮剥下来泡软，再一遍遍捶打，敲得越久布越细越软。做一件像样的树皮布，往往要连续敲上好几天，一点都不能急。可村里孩子多、牲畜多，白天总是吵吵闹闹，她的捶布声经常被打断，一不留神布就敲坏了，得从头再来。

Hina's daily work was to soak strips of bark and pound them over and over, the longer she worked, the softer and finer the cloth became. Making a proper piece of bark cloth often took several days straight of careful pounding. But the village was full of noisy children and animals during the day, and her work kept getting interrupted — one moment of distraction, and the cloth would tear, forcing her to start all over again.

有一天晚上，希纳照常在海边捶布，忽然听到远处传来孩子的哭闹声，一不留神，手里最后一段快要敲好的布被自己捶裂了——那可是她准备了整整三天的料子。她又累又委屈，抬头看见天上又大又圆的月亮，心里冒出一个念头："月亮上那么安静，如果能去那里做手工，该有多好。"

One night, while Hina was pounding cloth by the sea as usual, she suddenly heard a child crying in the distance. Startled, she tore the last piece of cloth she'd almost finished — cloth she had spent three whole days preparing. Exhausted and upset, she looked up at the big, round moon and a thought came to her: "The moon looks so quiet. How wonderful it would be to do my work up there."

她把独木舟推下海，带着木槌和剩下的树皮，朝着月亮的方向一路划去。海上风浪不小，好几次小船被浪打得东倒西歪，她咬着牙一次次把船稳住。划了整整一夜，眼看着月亮越来越近、越来越大，最后她终于触到了月亮柔软的地面。从此，希纳就留在了月亮上，四周安安静静，她终于可以从从容容地把树皮布一寸寸敲好。

She pushed her canoe into the sea and rowed straight toward the moon, carrying her mallet and the remaining bark. The waves were rough, and several times her small canoe was tossed about, but she gritted her teeth and steadied it again and again. She rowed all through the night, watching the moon grow closer and larger, until at last she touched its soft surface. From then on, Hina stayed on the moon, where everything was quiet, and she could finally pound her bark cloth patiently, one careful strip at a time.

Magpie sighed, "So it was because she felt so upset that she finally decided to go to the moon!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right — sometimes it's exactly because of the hardship along the way that we come to treasure the peace we finally find. People say that on full moon nights, if you look closely, the faint shadows on the moon are Hina with her mallet and bark cloth — she's still there, quietly doing her work."
