在玛雅人的传说里，库库尔坎是一位浑身覆盖着翠绿斑斓羽毛的神明，很久以前从远方来到玛雅的土地。那时候玛雅人还过着刀耕火种的日子，庄稼全靠天吃饭，不知道该什么时候播种、什么时候收割，遇到旱涝灾年，常常颗粒无收，日子过得十分艰难。

In Maya legend, Kukulkan is a deity covered in shimmering emerald feathers who came from a distant land to the Maya territory long ago. At that time, the Maya still practiced slash-and-burn farming, their crops entirely at the mercy of the weather. They had no way of knowing when to plant or when to harvest, and in years of drought or flood, they often ended up with nothing to show for their labor.

库库尔坎看到人们的困境，决定留下来教导他们。他教人们观测天象、制定历法、开凿沟渠、建造宏伟的石阶金字塔，让玛雅人的日子渐渐好了起来。可他知道，自己不能永远留在人间，还要去别的地方传授智慧。

Seeing the people's hardship, Kukulkan decided to stay and teach them. He taught them to observe the skies, create calendars, dig irrigation channels, and build magnificent stone pyramids, gradually improving the lives of the Maya people. But he knew he could not stay on earth forever — he still had wisdom to share elsewhere.

A-Ya said, "This is Kukulkan, the feathered serpent god from Maya legend. He came from a faraway land to the Maya territory and taught the people many important things."

小喜惊讶："他教了什么呀？"

Magpie was amazed, "What did he teach them?"

阿鸦说："那时候玛雅人靠天吃饭，不知道什么时候该播种、什么时候该收割，日子过得很艰难。库库尔坎决定留下来帮助他们。"

A-Ya said, "Back then, the Maya people's harvests depended entirely on the weather, and they had no way of knowing when to plant or harvest, making life very hard. Kukulkan decided to stay and help them."

小喜追问："他是怎么帮助他们的呀？"

Magpie pressed on, "How did he help them?"

阿鸦说："他教的东西可不少，从观测星象到建造金字塔，样样都教。可是有一天，他必须要离开了。"

A-Ya said, "He taught them quite a lot — from observing the stars to building pyramids. But one day, he had to leave."

小喜好奇："那他走之前说了什么吗？"

Magpie was curious, "Did he say anything before he left?"

阿鸦说："他许下了一个特别的承诺。具体是什么，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "He made a special promise. To find out exactly what it was, we'll have to start from the beginning."

库库尔坎先是长年累月观测太阳和星星每天升起落下的位置，经过反复记录总结，制定出一套精确的历法，告诉人们哪天该播种、哪天雨季将至、哪天该收获。有了历法，农田的收成一年比一年好。

Kukulkan spent years observing the rising and setting positions of the sun and stars, and through careful recording and analysis, created a precise calendar that told people when to plant, when the rainy season would arrive, and when to harvest. With the calendar, harvests grew better year after year.

He taught them to dig irrigation channels to bring river water to dry fields; taught them to record their observations of the sky and farming knowledge in writing carved on stone tablets, so future generations could learn from this wisdom too; and he passed on the methods for building stone-step pyramids, teaching them to precisely calculate angles and heights so magnificent structures could stand for thousands of years.

Under Kukulkan's guidance, the Maya people's lives grew better and better, and their city-states gradually flourished. But Kukulkan knew he could not stay on earth forever — he still had wisdom to share elsewhere. Before leaving, he made a promise: every year on the days of the spring and autumn equinox, he would return to visit the people. To honor him, the Maya spent decades building a magnificent pyramid at Chichen Itza, its structure precisely designed according to the movements of the sun and stars. Finally, on the spring equinox afternoon of the year it was completed, sunlight fell across the pyramid's steps, casting a series of triangular shadows that wound down from the top, connecting to the serpent head carving at the base — making it look as though a great serpent were slowly slithering down the staircase. People believed this was Kukulkan, keeping his promise and returning to visit them.
