In Polynesian legend, Rata was a brave young hero who longed to build a magnificent canoe unlike any other, so he could set out on an important voyage across the sea. But building such a great vessel meant cutting down the thickest, tallest tree in the forest.
The Polynesian people believed the forest was home to many unseen spirits, its true guardians. To take anything from the forest, one had to sincerely ask permission first and give thanks for its gifts — otherwise, unexpected trouble would follow.

Magpie saw a painting of a towering tree crashing down, surrounded by faintly glowing little spirits, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what's going on here?"
A-Ya said, "This is Rata, a hero from Polynesian legend. He wanted to build a great canoe for a long voyage, and the first step was to cut down a tree in the forest — but he had no idea this would land him in serious trouble."
Magpie was amazed, "How could cutting a tree cause trouble?"
A-Ya said, "On the first day, Rata felled a towering tree and went home excitedly to rest, planning to continue the work the next day."
Magpie pressed on, "So what happened the next day?"
A-Ya said, "The next day, when he returned to the forest, he could hardly believe his eyes."
Magpie was curious, "What did he see?"
A-Ya said, "This strange thing happened several times in a row, and Rata decided to find out exactly what was going on. To find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."
Magpie sighed, "So the tree standing back up was the spirits reminding him to be grateful!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right — once Rata learned to respect and thank nature, the forest gave back to him a canoe even more beautiful than the one he could have built alone. This shows that working with nature with respect is often more powerful than simply taking by force."
The legend of Rata building his canoe is told in Maori culture in New Zealand as well as in other Polynesian island cultures. The tradition depicted in the story — asking first before taking — continues to shape local attitudes toward forests and natural resources to this day.
