In Polynesian legend, Maui was a well-known demigod hero. He was small and the youngest of his brothers, who often dismissed him as "too small to be of any use" and refused to take him along whenever they went fishing.

毛伊心里很不服气，悄悄想出了一个办法。他随身带着一件外婆留给他的宝贝——一个用外婆下巴骨磨制而成的魔法鱼钩，这件宝贝后来在一次特别的出海中，派上了大用场。

Maui refused to accept this, and quietly came up with a plan. He carried with him a treasured gift from his grandmother — a magical fishhook carved from her jawbone — which would later prove its worth on one extraordinary fishing trip.

Magpie saw a painting of Maui and his brothers pulling hard on a thick fishing line out at sea, with something enormous faintly visible beneath the waves, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what did they catch?"

阿鸦说："这得从毛伊被哥哥们嫌弃说起。他个头瘦小，哥哥们出海打鱼从来不带他，可这一次，毛伊想出了一个办法。"

A-Ya said, "This starts with Maui being looked down on by his brothers. He was small, and they never took him fishing — but this time, Maui came up with a plan."

小喜惊讶："什么办法呀？"

Magpie was amazed, "What kind of plan?"

阿鸦说："哥哥们出海那天，毛伊偷偷藏进了独木舟底部，等船划到远海才钻出来，把哥哥们吓了一跳。"

A-Ya said, "On the day his brothers set out, Maui secretly hid at the bottom of the canoe, only climbing out once they were far out at sea — startling his brothers."

小喜追问："那哥哥们把他赶下船了吗？"

Magpie pressed on, "Did his brothers throw him off the boat?"

阿鸦说："船已经划到深海，只好由着他留下。毛伊趁机拿出了自己随身携带的一件宝贝。"

A-Ya said, "The canoe was already far out at sea, so they had no choice but to let him stay. Maui then took the chance to bring out a treasure he'd been carrying."

小喜好奇："什么宝贝呀？"

Magpie was curious, "What treasure?"

阿鸦说："是外婆留给他的魔法鱼钩。他把钩子抛进了深海——具体钓上来了什么，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "It was a magical fishhook his grandmother had left him. He cast it into the deep sea — to find out exactly what he caught, we'll have to start from the beginning."

毛伊是家里最小的弟弟，个头瘦小，总被几个哥哥说"太瘦小，帮不上忙"，每次出海打鱼都不带他。毛伊心里很不服气，决定想办法证明自己。有一天早晨哥哥们收拾渔具准备出海，毛伊趁他们不注意，偷偷溜进独木舟最底部藏了起来。

Maui was the youngest and smallest of his brothers, who always said he was "too small to be of any use" and never took him fishing. Maui refused to accept this and decided to prove himself. One morning, as his brothers prepared their fishing gear, Maui quietly slipped into the bottom of the canoe without them noticing and hid there.

船划到远海后，毛伊才从舱底钻出来。哥哥们又惊又气，想把他赶下船，可船已经划到深海，只好由着他。这时候，毛伊拿出了自己随身携带的宝贝——一个用外婆下巴骨磨制而成的魔法鱼钩，这是外婆生前特意留给他的礼物。他把鱼钩挂上鱼线，悄悄念了一段咒语，然后把钩子抛向深不见底的海水里。

Once the canoe was far out at sea, Maui climbed out from the bottom. His brothers were both startled and annoyed, wanting to throw him off — but they were already too far out, so they had no choice but to let him stay. Maui then took out a treasure he carried with him — a magical fishhook carved from his grandmother's jawbone, a gift she had specially left him. He tied the hook to his fishing line, quietly murmured a chant, and cast it into the bottomless sea.

过了许久，鱼线忽然剧烈地抖动起来，毛伊使出浑身力气拉扯，哥哥们也赶紧上前帮忙。众人合力拉了很久很久，水面下渐渐浮现出一片巨大的陆地——不是鱼，而是一整块沉睡在海底的土地！毛伊叮嘱哥哥们："这片土地是新生的，一定要先请祭司来祝福，才能动土开垦，千万不要着急。"可哥哥们看着眼前这片辽阔的新陆地，兴奋得已经等不及了，不顾毛伊的劝阻，拿起工具就开始砍伐、开路。土地在还没得到祝福时被反复切割，渐渐变得坑坑洼洼、山峦起伏，再也无法恢复原来平坦的样子。这片被毛伊钓起的陆地，后来成了新西兰北岛，毛利语里至今还称呼它为"毛伊的鱼"。

After a long while, the fishing line suddenly jerked violently. Maui pulled with all his strength, and his brothers rushed to help. Together they pulled for a long, long time, until a massive landmass slowly rose beneath the waves — not a fish, but an entire slumbering piece of land! Maui warned his brothers, "This land is newly born — we must have a priest bless it first before breaking any ground. Please don't be hasty." But looking at the vast new land before them, the brothers were too excited to wait, and ignoring Maui's warning, picked up their tools and began cutting and clearing paths. Cut again and again before it could be blessed, the land gradually became rugged and mountainous, never able to return to its original flat form. This land that Maui fished up later became New Zealand's North Island, still called "Maui's Fish" in the Māori language today.

It's just a shame the brothers were too impatient to listen, leaving behind a small regret. It reminds us that even when something good comes along, it's worth being patient — waiting often brings a better result."
