Magpie saw a painting of an old woman flying through the night sky on a giant wooden mortar, with a walking hut following alongside, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, who is that? So magical!"
A-Ya said, "That's Baba Yaga, the most famous figure in Slavic legend — a mysterious old woman deep in the forest. This story begins with a kind girl who was mistreated by her stepmother, and had to go ask Baba Yaga for something."
Magpie was amazed, "What did she need to borrow?"
A-Ya said, "The fire at home had accidentally gone out, and the stepmother deliberately sent her to borrow fire from Baba Yaga — knowing full well the trip could be dangerous."
Magpie pressed on, "Was the girl alright along the way?"
A-Ya said, "Along the way, she met a few little characters who needed help, and her choices later turned out to matter a great deal."
Magpie was curious, "What happened when she met Baba Yaga?"
A-Ya said, "Baba Yaga gave her a task that seemed nearly impossible to complete. To find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."
Magpie sighed, "So the little creatures and things she helped all quietly came back to help her!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right — she never expected anything in return for her kindness, but that very kindness ended up bringing her unexpected help exactly when she needed it most."
