在古罗马的传说里，罗马城的建立跟一对双胞胎兄弟和一只母狼有关。很久很久以前，在意大利的一座小城里，一对刚出生的双胞胎兄弟因为王位纷争，被狠心的叔祖父下令扔进了台伯河。

In ancient Roman legend, the founding of Rome is tied to a pair of twin brothers and a she-wolf. Long, long ago, in a small city in Italy, a pair of newborn twin brothers were thrown into the Tiber River on the orders of their cruel great-uncle, caught up in a struggle over the throne.

河水湍急，篮子却奇迹般地被冲到岸边，卡在了一棵无花果树下。恰巧一只母狼路过，听到婴儿的哭声，非但没有伤害他们，反而心生怜悯，把两个孩子叼回自己的山洞，用狼奶悉心哺育。

The river current was swift, but the basket miraculously washed ashore, catching on a fig tree. A she-wolf happened to pass by, and hearing the babies cry, felt only compassion instead of harm — she carried them back to her den and nursed them with her own milk.

小喜看到画里一只母狼温柔地守护着两个熟睡的婴儿，山洞外阳光洒落、河流蜿蜒，好奇地问："阿鸦，这两个婴儿是谁呀？母狼为什么要照顾他们？"

Magpie saw a painting of a she-wolf gently watching over two sleeping babies, sunlight streaming into the cave and a river winding outside, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, who are these babies? Why is the wolf taking care of them?"

阿鸦说："这是古罗马传说里最出名的故事——一对双胞胎兄弟，罗慕路斯和雷穆斯。他们的身世很特别，一开始的处境也很不容易。"

A-Ya said, "This is the most famous legend in ancient Roman lore — twin brothers named Romulus and Remus. Their origins were remarkable, and things weren't easy for them at the start."

Magpie was amazed, "What happened to them?"

阿鸦说："他们刚出生的时候，因为一场王位纷争，被家人下令扔进了河里。"

A-Ya said, "Right after they were born, they were thrown into the river on their family's orders, caught up in a dispute over the throne."

小喜追问："那他们后来怎么样了？"

Magpie pressed on, "So what happened to them after that?"

阿鸦说："幸运的是，一只母狼救了他们，还有一位牧羊人后来收养了他们。兄弟俩长大之后，做了一个重要的决定。"

A-Ya said, "Luckily, a she-wolf saved them, and a shepherd later adopted them. Once the brothers grew up, they made an important decision."

小喜好奇："什么决定呀？"

Magpie was curious, "What decision?"

阿鸦说："他们想建立一座属于自己的新城，可这中间还发生了一件有意思的事。具体是什么，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "They wanted to build a new city of their own, but something interesting happened along the way. To find out exactly what, we'll have to start from the beginning."

很久很久以前，在意大利的一座小城里，一对刚出生的双胞胎兄弟因为王位纷争，被狠心的叔祖父下令扔进了台伯河。河水湍急，装着他们的篮子却奇迹般地被冲到岸边，卡在了一棵无花果树下，兄弟俩这才幸运地保住了性命。

Long, long ago, in a small city in Italy, a pair of newborn twin brothers were thrown into the Tiber River on the orders of their cruel great-uncle, caught up in a struggle over the throne. The river current was swift, but the basket carrying them miraculously washed ashore, catching on a fig tree — and that's how the brothers luckily survived.

恰巧一只母狼路过，听到婴儿的哭声，非但没有伤害他们，反而心生怜悯，把两个孩子叼回自己的山洞，用狼奶悉心哺育。附近还有一只啄木鸟，也时常衔来食物帮忙照看这两个孩子，就这样，兄弟俩在动物的守护下平安长大。

A she-wolf happened to pass by, and hearing the babies cry, felt only compassion instead of harm — she carried them back to her den and nursed them with her own milk. Nearby, a woodpecker also often brought food to help look after the two children. And so, the brothers grew up safely under the protection of these animals.

后来，一位善良的牧羊人发现了这个奇特的场景，把兄弟俩收养回家，取名为罗慕路斯和雷穆斯，抚养他们长大成人。兄弟俩渐渐懂事后得知了自己的身世，决定要在被母狼救起的地方，建立一座属于自己的新城。可是新的问题出现了：这座城该叫什么名字？该由谁来做决定？兄弟俩谁也不愿意轻易让步，于是决定用一个公平的办法——观察天空中飞过的秃鹫数量，谁看到的更多，就由谁来命名建城。雷穆斯先看到了六只秃鹫，正得意的时候，罗慕路斯紧接着看到了十二只！按照约定，罗慕路斯赢得了这场友好的较量，于是这座新城便以他的名字命名——"罗马"。

Later, a kind shepherd discovered this remarkable scene and adopted the brothers, naming them Romulus and Remus, and raising them into adulthood. As the brothers grew older and learned of their origins, they decided to build a new city of their own at the very spot where the she-wolf had saved them. But a new question arose: what should the city be called, and who should decide? Neither brother wanted to give way easily, so they agreed on a fair method — counting the vultures flying overhead, and whoever saw more would have the right to name and found the city. Remus spotted six vultures first, and just as he was feeling pleased, Romulus spotted twelve right after! By their agreement, Romulus won this friendly contest, and so the new city was named after him — "Rome."

A-Ya nodded, "That's right — when the brothers disagreed, instead of quarreling, they found a fair and friendly way to settle it. That kind of wisdom is part of why Rome was able to thrive for so long."

The Romans later built a famous bronze statue called the "Capitoline Wolf" at the very spot where the she-wolf nursed the twins. It still stands in Rome today, remaining one of the city's most iconic symbols, and has kept the legend of the wolf who raised the twins alive for over two thousand years.
