In the folk tradition of the Ashanti people of West Africa, Anansi the Spider is the most famous "keeper of stories," almost all West African folktales are said to be tales that Anansi told to the world. He's clever and quick-witted, but his eagerness to gain an advantage often gets him into comical trouble, making him a classic "wise trickster" of African folklore.

Later, Anansi's stories traveled across the Atlantic Ocean along with the journeys of people, spreading to the Caribbean and the Americas, and evolving into many new versions. To this day, he remains a classic character that children in many places grow up hearing about.

Magpie saw a painting of a spider with a big gourd tied to the front of his belly, clumsily trying to climb a tree, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what's it doing?"

A-Ya said, "That's Anansi, the most famous spider in African folk tales. He wanted to gather up all the wisdom in the world into that gourd, and keep it all for himself."

Magpie was amazed, "Can all the wisdom in the world really fit into one gourd?"

A-Ya said, "Anansi traveled everywhere, gathering up every bit of wisdom he could find, until the gourd was completely full, and he felt very pleased with himself."

Magpie pressed on, "So what did he do with the gourd?"

A-Ya said, "He tied the gourd tightly to the front of his belly, planning to climb to the top of the tallest tree and hide it, so no one else could ever take it."

Magpie was curious, "Did he manage to climb up?"

A-Ya said, "That climb led him into quite a bit of trouble. To find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

A-Ya, why did Anansi want to keep all the wisdom for himself?
Anansi thought that if all the wisdom in the world belonged to him alone, then everyone with a problem would have to come to him, and he would become the most impressive, most respected creature of all. So he traveled across mountains and lakes, asking every wise animal he met for their wisdom, and packed everything he collected into a specially made gourd, until it was so full that not a single drop more could fit.
📌 智慧 (zhìhuì) = wisdom
🐦
So where did he try to hide the gourd?
Anansi thought the safest place would be the top of the tallest tree in the whole village, somewhere no one else could climb. He tied the gourd tightly to the front of his belly with vines and began climbing. But the gourd was big and round, and it got wedged right between him and the trunk. Every time he tried to climb, the gourd got in the way, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get any higher. He was sweating and frustrated, but he simply couldn't make it up.
📌 藤蔓 (téngmàn) = vine
🐦
What happened next? Did he manage to solve the problem?
Anansi's young son, Ntikuma, happened to be playing beneath the tree, and seeing his father in such a clumsy mess, couldn't help but say, father, wouldn't it be easier to climb if you tied the gourd to your back instead? Anansi froze at the words, how had he never thought of that himself! Embarrassed and furious, he thought, I've gathered all the wisdom in the world into this gourd, and yet my own son thought of something this simple before I did, clearly, the wisdom of this world can never truly belong to just one person. The more he thought about it, the more upset he became, and in a fit of frustration, he hurled the gourd down from the top of the tree. It shattered with a crash, and all the wisdom inside scattered on the wind, drifting into every corner of the world. From that day on, everyone carries a small piece of wisdom within them, and no one can ever hold it all alone.

Magpie sighed, "So it was Anansi's son who was actually the wisest one!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right. Anansi was so set on keeping wisdom for himself that he forgot wisdom was always meant to be shared. Sometimes the simplest truths are seen first by the people right around us, and that's exactly why, to this day, the wisdom of the world is scattered among everyone, and no one can ever own it all."
