In the folk tradition of the Ashanti people of West Africa, Anansi the Spider is the most famous "keeper of stories," almost all West African folktales are said to be tales that Anansi told to the world. He's clever and quick-witted, but his eagerness to gain an advantage often gets him into comical trouble, making him a classic "wise trickster" of African folklore.
Later, Anansi's stories traveled across the Atlantic Ocean along with the journeys of people, spreading to the Caribbean and the Americas, and evolving into many new versions. To this day, he remains a classic character that children in many places grow up hearing about.

Magpie saw a painting of a spider with a big gourd tied to the front of his belly, clumsily trying to climb a tree, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what's it doing?"
A-Ya said, "That's Anansi, the most famous spider in African folk tales. He wanted to gather up all the wisdom in the world into that gourd, and keep it all for himself."
Magpie was amazed, "Can all the wisdom in the world really fit into one gourd?"
A-Ya said, "Anansi traveled everywhere, gathering up every bit of wisdom he could find, until the gourd was completely full, and he felt very pleased with himself."
Magpie pressed on, "So what did he do with the gourd?"
A-Ya said, "He tied the gourd tightly to the front of his belly, planning to climb to the top of the tallest tree and hide it, so no one else could ever take it."
Magpie was curious, "Did he manage to climb up?"
A-Ya said, "That climb led him into quite a bit of trouble. To find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."
Magpie sighed, "So it was Anansi's son who was actually the wisest one!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right. Anansi was so set on keeping wisdom for himself that he forgot wisdom was always meant to be shared. Sometimes the simplest truths are seen first by the people right around us, and that's exactly why, to this day, the wisdom of the world is scattered among everyone, and no one can ever own it all."
Anansi is the most famous folk character of the Ashanti people of West Africa, and almost all Ashanti folktales are collectively known as "Anansi stories." The legend of the "wisdom gourd" is said to explain why no single person in the world can ever possess all wisdom, because wisdom has always been scattered among everyone.
