阿基米德是古希腊最伟大的数学家和发明家之一,生活在两千多年前的西西里岛叙拉古城,一生留下了无数关于杠杆、浮力、几何学的重要发现,被后人称为"力学之父"。

Archimedes was one of the greatest mathematicians and inventors of ancient Greece, living more than two thousand years ago in the city of Syracuse on the island of Sicily. Throughout his life, he made countless important discoveries about levers, buoyancy, and geometry, and later generations came to call him the "father of mechanics."

这个故事讲的是阿基米德最出名的一次顿悟——国王委托他鉴定一顶金冠是否被工匠掺了假,他百思不得其解,直到有一天洗澡时,才终于想通了办法。

This story tells of Archimedes' most famous moment of insight, the king asked him to determine whether a goldsmith had secretly mixed cheaper metal into a crown, and Archimedes puzzled over it for days, until one day, while taking a bath, he finally figured out how.

小喜看到画里一个人光着脚从浴室里冲出来,手舞足蹈的样子,好奇地问:"阿鸦,他这是怎么了呀?"

Magpie saw a painting of a man rushing barefoot out of a bathhouse, waving his arms about, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what's going on with him?"

阿鸦说:"这是阿基米德,古希腊最聪明的数学家。他刚刚想通了一个困扰他好几天的大难题。"

A-Ya said, "That's Archimedes, the cleverest mathematician in ancient Greece. He had just figured out a huge problem that had been bothering him for days."

小喜惊讶:"什么难题呀?"

Magpie was amazed, "What problem?"

阿鸦说:"国王让工匠打造了一顶纯金皇冠,可怀疑工匠偷偷掺了银子,让阿基米德想办法鉴定,还不能损坏皇冠。"

A-Ya said, "The king had a goldsmith make a crown of pure gold, but suspected the smith had secretly mixed in silver. He asked Archimedes to find a way to test it, without damaging the crown."

小喜追问:"这也太难了吧,怎么鉴定呀?"

Magpie pressed on, "That sounds so hard, how could he even test it?"

阿鸦说:"阿基米德想了好几天都没有头绪,直到有一天他去公共浴场泡澡……"

A-Ya said, "Archimedes thought about it for days without any luck, until one day he went to soak in the public bathhouse..."

小喜好奇:"泡澡的时候发生了什么呀?"

Magpie was curious, "What happened while he was soaking?"

阿鸦说:"他注意到了一个谁都没在意过的小细节,具体发生了什么,还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "He noticed a tiny detail that no one else had ever paid attention to. To find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

国王请工匠打造了一顶纯金的皇冠,用来供奉神庙,可后来有人举报,说工匠可能偷偷把一部分黄金换成了等重的银子,自己私吞了差价。国王起了疑心,把阿基米德叫来,让他想办法验证皇冠是不是纯金打造的,但有一个条件,绝对不能破坏或熔化这顶皇冠。
The king had a goldsmith make a crown of pure gold to be dedicated at a temple, but afterward someone reported that the smith might have secretly swapped part of the gold for an equal weight of silver, pocketing the difference. Suspicious, the king summoned Archimedes and asked him to find a way to verify whether the crown was truly pure gold, but on one condition: the crown could not be damaged or melted down in any way.

阿基米德冥思苦想了好几天,翻来覆去地琢磨,可怎么也想不出一个既能验证真假、又不损坏皇冠的办法。他每天满脑子都是这个问题,吃饭走路都心不在焉,直到有一天,他实在需要放松一下,便去了叙拉古城里的公共浴场泡澡。
Archimedes racked his brain for days, turning the problem over and over, but he simply couldn't come up with a way to test it without damaging the crown. The problem consumed his thoughts every day, he was absent-minded even while eating or walking, until one day, needing a break, he went to soak in the public bathhouse in Syracuse.

阿基米德慢慢坐进注满水的浴缸里,忽然注意到,自己的身体一沉进水里,浴缸里的水就跟着往外溢出一些,溢出的水量似乎正好跟他身体的体积有关。他猛地一下坐直了身子,如果把皇冠放进水里,测出它排开的水量,再拿一块同样重量的纯金放进水里做对比,如果两者排开的水量不一样,就说明皇冠里掺了别的东西!他兴奋极了,顾不上好好穿戴整齐,随手抓了件外袍披在身上,就这样跑到大街上,一边跑一边大喊我发现了、我发现了!街坊邻居都被他这副模样逗笑了,可谁也没想到,这个洗澡时的意外发现后来成了物理学里最重要的原理之一。
Archimedes slowly settled into a tub full of water, and suddenly noticed that as his body sank into the water, some of the water in the tub spilled out, and the amount that spilled out seemed to match exactly the volume of his body. He sat bolt upright, if he placed the crown in water and measured how much water it displaced, then compared that to a lump of pure gold of the same weight, if the two displaced different amounts of water, that would prove something else had been mixed into the crown! He was thrilled, and without bothering to get properly dressed, he grabbed a robe, threw it over himself, and ran out into the street, shouting again and again, I've found it, I've found it! The neighbors couldn't help laughing at the sight of him, but no one realized that this accidental discovery in the bathtub would go on to become one of the most important principles in all of physics.

Magpie laughed, "Running out like that is so funny!" A-Ya said, "It is, but that's also what makes this story so precious. Many great discoveries aren't made by forcing yourself to grind away at a problem, they come suddenly, in the moment you relax and stop pushing so hard. That lesson still holds true, even two thousand years later."
