In many ancient West African legends, the sky was once so close to the earth that people could simply reach up and touch it, and whenever they were hungry, they could break off a piece of the sky to eat, with no need to farm or labor at all. This ancient creation tale, told across Nigeria and other parts of West Africa, explains why humans later had to work hard tilling the land.

This story is still told by word of mouth across West Africa today, often used to teach children to cherish food and avoid waste, because according to the legend, it was people's wastefulness that ultimately drove the sky far away from the earth.

Magpie looked up at the sky high above, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, why is the sky so high up? Was it always like this?"

A-Ya said, "A very long time ago, the sky actually hung very close to the ground, so close that people could reach up and touch it."

Magpie was amazed, "That close? What did people do with it?"

A-Ya said, "The sky was soft, and edible. Whenever someone was hungry, they could simply break off a piece and eat it, there was no need to farm at all."

Magpie pressed on, "That sounds so convenient, so how did the sky end up flying away?"

A-Ya said, "The sky had one rule that everyone had to follow, but there was one person in the village who never took it seriously."

Magpie was curious, "What rule?"

A-Ya said, "The rule seemed simple enough, but the trouble it eventually caused was something no one expected. To find out exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

A-Ya, when the sky hung so close to the ground back then, did it have any rules for the villagers?
The sky had only one rule: whenever someone broke off a piece, they could only take exactly as much as they could eat, no more, no less, and waste was strictly forbidden. The adults and children in the village all followed this rule, and life was easy and happy, no one ever had to work the fields, and whenever they were hungry, food was always right there.
📌 规矩 (guīju) = rule
🐦
So who was it that broke this rule?
There was a woman in the village who always did things carelessly and on too large a scale. One day while cooking, she casually broke off a huge piece of the sky, several times more than she actually needed, and after eating only half of it, she couldn't finish the rest, so she carelessly threw the leftover piece on the ground without a second thought. Seeing itself wasted so carelessly made the sky quite unhappy, but it patiently held back, only rising up just a little bit higher, hoping to remind everyone to be more restrained.
📌 浪费 (làngfèi) = waste
🐦
When people noticed the sky had risen higher, did they become more careful?
Unfortunately, they did not. The woman kept doing things her own way, breaking off more of the sky than she needed again and again, and carelessly discarding whatever she couldn't finish, and the waste grew worse day by day. The sky rose higher and higher each time, hoping people would understand its warning, but the villagers never truly took it seriously. Finally, one day, the sky, having endured all it could, rose all at once to a height no one could ever reach again, and it never returned close to the ground. From that day on, people could no longer reach up and pick the sky for food, and had to clear the land and farm it themselves, working hard, in order to have anything to eat.
📌 耕种 (gēngzhòng) = to farm

Magpie suddenly understood, "So it was because of the wastefulness that the sky flew away!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right. Everyone could have kept living easily and comfortably forever, but because they didn't know how to cherish what they had or hold themselves back, they ended up losing that convenience in the end. This story still reminds people today that no matter what you have, you should never take it for granted and waste it."
