People around the world have long had many romantic ideas about the colorful bands of light that drift across the night sky, some said it was their ancestors dancing in the heavens, others said it was light reflecting off a warrior's armor. This magical phenomenon is what we call the "aurora" today.
But today, A-Ya isn't going to tell a legend, instead, he'll explain the real science behind the aurora, it turns out this has to do with the distant sun, and an invisible "armor" that surrounds the Earth.

Magpie saw a painting of green and purple ribbons of light drifting across the night sky like flowing silk, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what is this? Why is there colorful light in the sky?"
A-Ya said, "That's called the aurora, a sight many people dream of seeing with their own eyes at least once in their life. Where it comes from actually has a lot to do with the distant sun, and with our own Earth."
Magpie was amazed, "The sun? The sun is so far away from us, how could it be related?"
A-Ya said, "The sun is actually constantly flinging countless invisible tiny particles out into space, and some of them drift toward Earth."
Magpie pressed on, "So when these tiny particles reach Earth, will they hit us?"
A-Ya said, "Don't worry, Earth has an invisible layer of armor that blocks most of the particles, only letting a small portion slip in near the North and South Poles."
Magpie was curious, "So what happens to the particles that slip in?"
A-Ya said, "They collide head-on with the air high up in the sky, and that collision produces beautiful light, exactly how that happens, and why there are several different colors, we'll have to start from the beginning."
Magpie sighed, "So the beautiful aurora is actually such a scientific thing!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right. Seeing a real aurora with your own eyes is something many people put on their lifetime bucket list. Iceland, Norway, Alaska, and northern Canada are all famous places to watch it, maybe someday you'll get to see one in person too."
Earth isn't the only place with an aurora, Jupiter and Saturn have magnetic fields far stronger than Earth's, and their auroras are also far brighter. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station can even look down at Earth's aurora from space, seeing it as a glowing ring surrounding the planet's poles.
