"Jiang the Elder fishes, only those willing take the bait" is a Chinese proverb passed down for thousands of years, describing someone who never forces things, but instead waits for the person who truly appreciates them to come on their own. Behind this proverb lies a special chapter in the life of an old man beside the Wei River.

This old man was named Jiang Ziya, an extraordinarily wise strategist in Chinese history, who later helped King Wen and King Wu of Zhou establish the Zhou Dynasty, and was honored by later generations as "the Grand Duke." This story of him fishing at the Wei River became one of the most widely told classic episodes in the novel "Investiture of the Gods."

Magpie saw a painting of a white-haired old man sitting alone by the river fishing, looking calm and unhurried, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, is this grandpa fishing? He looks so at ease."

A-Ya said, "This old man's name is Jiang Ziya, and he had actually been fishing beside the Wei River like this for three whole years, but his hook never once had any bait on it."

Magpie was amazed, "No bait? Then what was he actually trying to catch?"

A-Ya said, "When Jiang Ziya was young, he read a great many books and had deep learning, but unfortunately never had the chance to put his talents to use, and even in his seventies, he was still an unknown old man."

Magpie pressed on, "So why did he fish with a hook that had no bait?"

A-Ya said, "He wasn't really trying to catch fish, he was waiting for someone who would truly appreciate his talent to come by, and invite him to serve."

Magpie was curious, "So did someone actually come looking for him later?"

A-Ya said, "Yes, and it was someone quite special. This encounter went on to change the fate of an entire kingdom, exactly how it happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

A-Ya, why did Jiang Ziya fish with a hook that had no bait?
When Jiang Ziya was young, he studied diligently and had extremely deep learning, well versed in astronomy, geography, military strategy, and statecraft, but unfortunately he never met anyone who recognized his worth. By the time he was in his seventies, King Zhou of the Shang dynasty had become cruel and reckless, and people across the land were hoping a wise and capable person would step forward to save the chaos. Jiang Ziya then came to the bank of the Wei River, and with a straight hook, no bait attached, sat there quietly fishing.
📌 学问 (xuéwèn) = learning, knowledge
🐦
Fishing with a straight hook and no bait, could that really catch any fish?
Of course it couldn't catch any fish, he really wasn't fishing for fish at all. Some villagers passed by and saw him, unable to help laughing at him, but Jiang Ziya said, I'm not fishing for fish, I'm waiting for whoever is willing to take the bait. This line of his is exactly where the later proverb Jiang the Elder fishes, only those willing take the bait comes from, what he was truly waiting for was a ruler who genuinely understood how to govern, and was willing to put him to good use.
📌 治国 (zhìguó) = to govern a country
🐦
So did such a ruler really appear later on?
Yes, it was Ji Chang, the leader of the Zhou tribe known as the Earl of the West, who later became King Wen of Zhou. He had been searching everywhere for talented people, and when he heard there was a strange old man fishing by the Wei River, he went there in person to visit, and discussed matters of state with Jiang Ziya, only to discover that the white-haired old man before him had extraordinary insight. Ji Chang invited Jiang Ziya on the spot to come and serve him, and together the two planned the great affairs of governing the kingdom. Later, Jiang Ziya also served Ji Chang's son, King Wu of Zhou, helping the Zhou dynasty overthrow the cruel King Zhou of Shang and establish an entirely new kingdom. Jiang Ziya was thus honored by later generations as the Grand Duke, becoming one of the wisest strategists in Chinese history.
📌 拜访 (bàifǎng) = to pay a visit

Magpie sighed, "So what he was really fishing for wasn't fish, but an opportunity!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right. Jiang Ziya waited for decades, and never gave up on himself just because his talent went unrecognized for so long. That patience and that vision are really what this story wants to teach us."
