On the beach at Padang, on the west coast of Sumatra in Indonesia, there really does stand a rock shaped like a person kneeling in a bowed posture, local people call it "Batu Malin Kundang." The origin of this rock is one of Indonesia's most widely told folk legends.

This legend tells the story of a son who went to sea to seek his fortune, and his elderly mother, and for hundreds of years, Indonesian parents have told it to their children, reminding them that no matter how far they travel or how wealthy they become, they must never forget the person who raised them.

Magpie saw a painting of a rock shaped like a person kneeling in a bowed posture standing by the sea, with the sunset reflecting on the water, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, why does this rock look so much like a person?"

A-Ya said, "That's one of Indonesia's most widely told folk legends, about a young man named Malin, and his mother. This rock is exactly the trace this story left behind."

Magpie was amazed, "A trace? What happened?"

A-Ya said, "When Malin was young, his family was very poor, and he lived with only his mother to rely on. Later, he decided to go to sea to seek a better life."

Magpie pressed on, "So how did things turn out for him?"

A-Ya said, "Many years later, he became a very wealthy merchant, married a beautiful wife, and sailed a fine big ship back to the fishing village where he was born."

Magpie was curious, "He must have been so happy to see his mother again, right?"

A-Ya said, "That's how it should have been, but things went in a completely different direction. Exactly what happened, we'll have to start from the beginning."

A-Ya, what actually happened after Malin came back to the fishing village?
When Malin's mother heard that her son's big ship had docked, she rushed to the harbor, overjoyed, to welcome him. But after decades apart, she had grown old and thin, dressed in simple worn clothes. Malin's wife, standing beside him, frowned at the sight of this shabbily dressed old woman, and whispered to Malin, who is this old beggar woman?
📌 迎接 (yíngjiē) = to welcome
🐦
Didn't Malin recognize his own mother?
He did recognize her, but because he felt his poor mother would embarrass him in front of his wife and the villagers, Malin hardened his heart, and in front of everyone, declared that this old woman was not his mother, and even had his men drive her away. His mother, shocked and heartbroken, called out his name again and again through her tears, but Malin still refused to acknowledge her, and turned to board his ship and leave.
📌 丢脸 (diūliǎn) = to lose face
🐦
So what did his mother do then?
His mother knelt on the sand, watching her son's ship grow smaller and smaller in the distance, heartbroken beyond words, and could not help praying to the sea, if he truly refuses to acknowledge me as his mother, then let the heavens judge between us. The moment she finished speaking, a fierce storm suddenly rose over the sea, dark clouds rolled in, thunder roared, and Malin's ship shook violently in the waves, until it slowly turned into a rock amid the crashing waves, remaining by the sea forever. This rock still stands on the coast of Sumatra today, people call it Batu Malin Kundang, and it reminds later generations that no matter how far you travel, you must never forget the person who raised you.
📌 祈求 (qíqiú) = to pray, to beg

Magpie felt a bit sad, "Malin really shouldn't have done that, his mother loved him so much." A-Ya nodded, "That's right. No matter how far you travel or how wealthy you become, you must never forget the person who raised you. That's exactly why this story has been told to children for hundreds of years."
