Have you ever wondered why you look like your mom and dad, maybe your dad's dimples or your mom's curly hair? Inside every single cell in your body, there is a tiny instruction manual called DNA. Written in the simplest of codes, this manual holds all the information needed to build a person.

DNA has a very special shape. Scientists describe it as a soft ladder twisted into a spiral, known as the double helix. Every rung of this ladder is made from a pair of letters, and although there are only four kinds of letters in total, their different ordering can write a one of a kind instruction manual for every living thing on Earth.

Magpie saw a painting of a glowing double helix ribbon floating in the air, and asked curiously, "A-Ya, what is this shiny twisted ribbon?"

A-Ya said, "This is not an ordinary twist, this is DNA, an instruction manual hidden inside every single cell in your body, containing all the secrets needed to build you."

Magpie was amazed, "An instruction manual? What exactly is written on it?"

A-Ya said, "It records what color your eyes are, whether your hair is straight or curly, and how tall you will grow, all of it is written inside."

Magpie pressed on, "So why do brothers and sisters not look the same?"

A-Ya said, "There is a very interesting rule hidden inside, half comes from the father and half from the mother, and the ways they can combine are almost endless."

Magpie was curious, "What about twins, do they end up with exactly the same combination?"

A-Ya said, "The story of twins is even more interesting, and it splits into two completely different situations. Exactly how it works, we will have to start from the beginning."

A-Ya, what does DNA actually look like?
Scientists describe the shape of DNA as a soft ladder twisted into a spiral, and its proper name is the double helix. Every rung of this ladder is formed by two tiny chemical letters holding hands in a pair, and there are only four kinds of letters in total, which scientists like to represent with the letters A, T, C, and G. What is remarkable is that these four letters can only pair up according to a fixed rule, one letter will always hold hands with one particular partner, and never with the wrong one.
📌 双螺旋 (shuāngluóxuán) = double helix
🐦
So how do these letters decide what I look like?
These letters line up in a row to form meaningful segments, and each segment is called a gene, with each gene usually responsible for one specific task, such as the gene that decides eye color, or the gene that decides curly or straight hair. All of the DNA winds up tightly and packs into long strands called chromosomes, and there are twenty three pairs of chromosomes inside a human cell, half of which come from the father and the other half from the mother.
📌 基因 (jīyīn) = gene
🐦
So why do brothers and sisters end up looking different?
This is because before the chromosomes from the father and mother are passed on to a child, they first go through a random shuffle and recombination, much like shuffling a deck of cards, and almost every single draw ends up with a slightly different combination. Because of this, apart from identical twins, it is almost impossible to find two people in the world with exactly the same gene combination. Identical twins are special because they grow from a single fertilized egg that splits into two, so their genes are almost exactly the same, while fraternal twins develop from two separate fertilized eggs at the same time, and end up with genes about as similar as ordinary brothers and sisters.

Magpie sighed, "So each of us is the result of one unique shuffle!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right, this is exactly why there are no two completely identical people in the world, every single person is a one of a kind existence."

Fun Facts

In 1953, scientists Watson and Crick first discovered the double helix structure of DNA, a discovery later regarded as one of the greatest scientific achievements of the twentieth century. If all of the DNA inside one person's body were stretched out end to end, it would be long enough to travel back and forth between the Earth and the Sun dozens of times, yet it is folded up tightly enough to fit inside the tiny nucleus of a single cell.
