从前有个孩子叫马良，家里很穷，买不起一支笔，可他特别喜欢画画。没有笔，他就折一根树枝，蹲在河边的沙地上一笔一笔地练习，画鸟、画鱼、画花草，日日不间断，从不喊累。

Long ago there was a boy named Ma Liang. His family was very poor and could not afford even a single brush, but he loved drawing more than anything. Without a brush, he broke off a tree branch and knelt by the riverside, practicing stroke by stroke in the sand, drawing birds, fish, and flowers, every single day, without ever complaining of being tired.

马良这样苦练了好几年，画技越来越好，感动了梦里出现的一位白胡须老人。老人送给他一支神奇的笔，说凡是用这支笔画出来的东西，只要画完，就会变成真的。

Ma Liang practiced like this for several years, and his skill grew better and better, until an old man with a white beard appeared to him in a dream, moved by his dedication. The old man gave him a magic brush, saying that anything drawn with it, the moment it was finished, would come to life.

Magpie saw a painting of a brush floating in the air, its tip flowing with golden ink, and the koi fish it drew seemed ready to leap right out of the scroll. She asked curiously, "A-Ya, why is this brush so magical?"

A-Ya said, "This is the story of Ma Liang and his magic brush. Whatever this brush draws becomes real."

小喜追问："那马良是怎么得到这支神笔的呀？"

Magpie pressed on, "So how did Ma Liang get this magic brush?"

阿鸦说："他日日夜夜苦练画画，从不间断，这份坚持感动了一位神仙。"

A-Ya said, "He practiced drawing day and night without ever stopping, and this persistence moved an immortal."

小喜好奇："那他拿到神笔以后，做了什么呀？"

Magpie was curious, "So what did he do after getting the magic brush?"

阿鸦说："他给乡亲们画耕牛、画粮食，帮了很多穷苦人家，可这件事很快就传到了一位贪心县官的耳朵里。"

A-Ya said, "He drew oxen and grain for the villagers, helping many poor families, but news of this quickly reached the ears of a greedy county official."

小喜担心："那个县官想干什么呀？"

Magpie worried, "What did that official want to do?"

阿鸦说："他想霸占神笔，还把马良抓了起来，后面发生的事更精彩，具体是怎么回事，还得从头讲起。"

A-Ya said, "He wanted to seize the magic brush for himself, and even had Ma Liang locked up. What happened next is even more exciting, and exactly how it unfolded, we will have to start from the beginning."

是呀，马良家里穷得连一支笔都买不起，可他特别爱画画，就每天蹲在河边的沙地上，折一根树枝当笔，一笔一笔地练习，画鸟、画鱼、画花草。这样练了好几年，从不间断，画技越来越好。有一天夜里，他梦见一位白胡须的老人，老人被他的坚持深深打动，送给了他一支闪着金光的神奇笔，还告诉他，凡是用这支笔画出来的东西，画完就会变成真的。

That's right. Ma Liang's family was so poor they could not afford even a single brush, but he loved drawing more than anything, so every day he knelt by the riverside sand, broke off a tree branch to use as a brush, and practiced stroke by stroke, drawing birds, fish, and flowers. He practiced like this for several years without ever stopping, and his skill grew better and better. One night he dreamed of an old man with a white beard, who was deeply moved by his persistence and gave him a magic brush that gleamed with golden light, telling him that anything drawn with this brush would come to life the moment it was finished.

马良得到神笔以后，一心想着帮助乡亲，谁家没有耕牛，他就画一头耕牛送去；谁家闹了饥荒，他就画满仓的粮食。乡亲们都过上了好日子，可这件事很快传到了当地一位贪婪的县官耳朵里。县官立刻派人把马良抓进了官府，逼着他画一座金山，想要占为己有。

After getting the magic brush, Ma Liang thought only of helping his fellow villagers. If a family had no ox for plowing, he would draw one and send it to them; if a family was suffering from famine, he would draw storehouses full of grain. The villagers all began to live better lives, but news of this quickly reached a greedy local official. The official immediately sent men to seize Ma Liang and drag him into the government hall, forcing him to draw a mountain of gold, wanting to claim it for himself.

马良假装答应了县官的要求，可他没有画金山，而是画了一片波光粼粼的大海，海上还画了一艘大船。县官一心想着占便宜，立刻带着手下爬上了船，命令马良继续画，去把金山运回来。马良假装顺从，笔一挥，画出了越来越大的狂风巨浪，船被巨浪掀得东倒西歪，最后彻底翻了。县官和他的手下从此再也没能找到马良，也没能再抢到神笔。马良则悄悄回到了家乡，继续用这支笔，画耕牛、画粮食，帮助更多需要帮助的乡亲。

Ma Liang pretended to agree to the official's demand, but instead of drawing a mountain of gold, he drew a shimmering sea, and on the sea he drew a large ship. Eager to seize his prize, the official immediately climbed aboard with his men, ordering Ma Liang to keep drawing so they could carry the gold mountain back. Ma Liang pretended to obey, but with a sweep of his brush, he drew wind and waves growing larger and larger, until the ship was tossed about and finally capsized completely. The official and his men were never seen again, and never managed to seize the magic brush. Ma Liang quietly returned to his village, and continued using the brush to draw oxen and grain, helping even more people who needed it.
