Earth has repeatedly gone through "ice ages," with thick glaciers covering large areas of land and sea levels dropping sharply. The most recent ice age ended about ten thousand years ago.

窗外下起大雪，小喜盯着窗户看了好久，好奇地问："阿鸦，地球是不是以前比现在冷很多？"

Xiaoxi stared out the window as snow fell, and asked curiously, "Aya, was the Earth much colder a long time ago?"

Aya put down the twig and said, "That's a long story — it starts with the great ice ages long, long ago..."

小喜追问："冰期是什么意思呀？"

Xiaoxi pressed on, "What does 'ice age' mean?"

阿鸦说："简单说，就是地球有一段时间特别冷，冰川能盖住半个大陆。"

Aya said, "Simply put, it's a period when the Earth got so cold that glaciers covered half a continent."

冰河时期，是地球气温大幅下降、大片陆地被冰川覆盖的时期。历史上地球经历过好几次这样的循环，不是只有一次。

An ice age is a period when Earth's temperature drops sharply and glaciers cover large areas of land. Earth has gone through this cycle several times, not just once.

主要跟地球绕太阳转的轨道有关——轨道形状、地轴倾斜角度，都会周期性地慢慢变化，导致地球接收到的太阳热量跟着变化，这个周期长达几万年。

It's mainly related to Earth's orbit around the sun — the orbit's shape and the tilt of the axis change slowly in cycles, changing how much solar heat Earth receives, over cycles lasting tens of thousands of years.

最出名的要数猛犸象——浑身长毛的"冰河巨兽"，还有披毛犀这些适应寒冷的动物。那时候的早期人类，靠兽皮御寒、靠火取暖，慢慢学会了适应极端气候。

The most famous is the woolly mammoth — a giant furry "ice age beast" — along with the woolly rhinoceros and other cold-adapted animals. Early humans back then used animal hides for warmth and fire for heat, gradually learning to adapt to extreme climates.

Xiaoxi sighed, "So the Earth has always cycled between cold and warm!" A-Ya nodded, "That's right. Afterward, Earth gradually warmed again, glaciers melted, and sea levels rose, shaping many of today's lakes and bays. Climate change is actually the norm in Earth's history, and scientists still study ice cores today to understand the patterns of climate change."
