Baldr was the most beloved of all the Norse gods, the embodiment of light and goodness, and the favorite son of Odin, king of the gods. Gentle and beautiful, everyone adored him. But Baldr began having strange dreams that foretold his own death. His mother, Frigg, grew deeply worried and traveled across the world, making every single thing swear an oath never to harm him, fire, water, iron, stone, sickness, beasts, and birds all promised.

The gods came to believe Baldr was now invincible, and turned it into a game, gathering to take turns throwing weapons at him for fun, laughing as arrows, spears, and stones bounced harmlessly away. No one imagined that this seemingly harmless game would become the heaviest turning point in all of Norse mythology.

Xiaoxi looked at a small dried mistletoe specimen in the museum display case and asked curiously, "Aya, why would such an unremarkable little plant be given such a prominent spot?"

Aya glanced at the mistletoe, his expression suddenly complicated. "Because it once killed a god." Xiaoxi's eyes widened in shock. "How could a plant kill a god?" Aya said slowly, "This god was named Baldr, the most beloved light god in Norse mythology. His mother, Frigg, went around asking nearly everything in the world to swear an oath never to harm Baldr, fire, water, iron, stone, sickness, beasts, all made the promise."

Xiaoxi pressed, "So what happened next? Was Baldr really completely safe?"

Aya said, "The gods truly turned it into a game. They stood in a circle, taking turns throwing arrows, spears, and stones at Baldr, watching every weapon bounce harmlessly away, laughing until they could barely stand."

Xiaoxi asked, a little worried, "But, did every single thing really swear the oath? Not one was missed?"

Aya's voice dropped. "Almost everything. Except for one thing, so small and unremarkable that Frigg overlooked it entirely."

Xiaoxi held her breath. "What was it?"

Aya deliberately teased, "A tiny plant that looked utterly harmless, mistletoe. Want to know what happened next? You'll have to keep listening."

Was mistletoe really so easy to overlook? How did Loki discover this loophole?
Loki had long been secretly jealous of Baldr, the more the gods adored him, the more bitter Loki grew. He quietly pried and asked around, and eventually coaxed the truth out of Frigg herself: mistletoe, being too young and small, had never been asked to swear the oath.
📌 嫉妒 (jídù) = jealousy, envy
🐦
So did he go straight after Baldr himself?
No. Loki carved an arrow from mistletoe and sought out Hodr, Baldr's blind brother. Unable to see, Hodr had always stood outside the circle, unable to join the throwing game like the others. Loki, feigning kindness, handed him the arrow and guided his hand to aim.
📌 假意 (jiǎyì) = feigned, pretend
🐦
Did Hodr have no idea at all that the arrow would take his brother's life?
He knew nothing at all. The moment the arrow flew, Baldr fell, and the gods' laughter froze instantly. That one arrow of mistletoe, the only thing that never swore the oath, became the heaviest arrow in all of Norse mythology, and one of the sparks that would later lead to Ragnarok.
📌 诸神黄昏 (zhūshén huánghūn) = Ragnarök, the final battle of the gods

Xiaoxi sighed, "How could Loki deceive his own blind brother like that..." A-Ya nodded, "Yes. This story has been passed down for a thousand years, and people remember more than just Baldr's death, they remember a lesson: even the most careful precautions can fail because of one overlooked detail, and harm often comes not from an enemy's strength, but from a moment of kindness or innocence exploited by someone close."

Fun Facts

In the real world, mistletoe later became tied to the Western Christmas tradition of kissing beneath it. One popular account holds that after Baldr's death, a grieving Frigg declared mistletoe would from then on bring only love and peace, never harm again, which is said to be the origin of the custom. This account is widely circulated in folklore, though its exact origins remain uncertain among scholars.
