Before the 15th century, books in Europe were copied entirely by hand. A single scribe might spend months, or even years, copying just one book. As a result, books were extremely rare and expensive, affordable only to churches and a handful of nobles, while ordinary people might never touch a book in their entire lives. In Mainz, Germany, a goldsmith named Johannes Gutenberg was pondering a bold question: could a machine be built to print words the way a seal stamps an image, instead of copying them by hand, one stroke at a time?
Gutenberg's inspiration came, surprisingly, from an ordinary wine press. He cast each letter as its own metal block, coated it with ink, and pressed hard using his modified press machine, producing a full page of neatly printed text. This seemingly simple idea would ultimately transform all of Europe.

Xiaoxi looked at a bulky wooden machine in the museum and asked curiously, "Aya, what is this strange machine for? It kind of looks like a wine press."
Aya laughed. "You're half right, it really was converted from a wine press. But what it presses out isn't grape juice, it's something that completely changed Europe." Xiaoxi grew even more curious. "Changed all of Europe? What is it exactly?" Aya said, "This is a movable-type printing press, invented by Gutenberg. Before this, if Europeans wanted a book, they had no choice but to copy it by hand, stroke by stroke, copying a single Bible could take an entire year. Gutenberg came up with a clever solution, casting every letter as its own small metal block, arranging whichever letters were needed, coating them with ink, and pressing them onto paper, one page done."
Xiaoxi pressed, "So how exactly did this machine work?"
Aya said, "Gutenberg cast every letter and punctuation mark as its own small metal block. These pieces could be freely arranged into any page of text. Once set, he'd brush on ink, lay down paper, and press hard with the machine, one page done."
Xiaoxi asked curiously, "Could these type pieces be reused?"
Aya said, "Absolutely, that was its greatest strength. Once a page was printed, the type could be taken apart, rearranged, and immediately used to print the next page, or even an entirely different book."
Xiaoxi pressed, "So what was the first book Gutenberg printed with this machine?"
Aya deliberately teased, "That book is now considered one of the most treasured in human history. Want to know which book it was, and what happened next? You'll have to keep listening."
Xiaoxi sighed, "A machine for pressing grapes actually changed the history of all Europe..." A-Ya nodded, "Yes, it reminds us that many great inventions began with inspiration from something completely ordinary nearby. True creativity is often about recombining things that already exist in an entirely new way."
Fewer than 50 copies of the original Gutenberg Bible survive today, making it one of the most treasured books in human history. A well-preserved fragment has been valued at tens of millions of dollars in recent years. The very book that transformed how knowledge spread across Europe has itself become an extraordinarily rare treasure.
