In Chinese mythology, Jiang Ziya was the legendary strategist who helped King Wu of Zhou overthrow the Shang dynasty and establish the Zhou dynasty. For many years, he had fished quietly by the banks of the Wei River, patiently waiting for a wise ruler who shared his ideals. Years later, he finally met King Wu, and together they accomplished this great task of changing dynasties.

After the war had settled, Jiang Ziya ascended the Terrace of Investiture, taking on a special mission: to bestow divine titles upon the many souls who had perished in the conflict, regardless of whether they had once been friend or foe, granting each of them a role and allowing their spirits to find peace, bringing this turbulent chapter of history to a solemn and complete close.

Xiaoxi looked at a painting showing a white-haired old man holding a sword atop a high terrace, with a beam of golden light rising above him and many faint figures appearing among the clouds. She asked curiously, "Aya, what is this elder doing?"

Aya looked at the scroll and said slowly, "His name is Jiang Ziya. Do you remember the old man who waited patiently for years by the Wei River? This painting shows the result of that wait, he finally completed the most important task of his entire life."

Xiaoxi pressed, "What did he complete?"

Aya said, "This has to do with an entire war that changed dynasties. After the fighting ended, there were still many things waiting to be handled, and the most important one is hidden right here on this terrace."

Xiaoxi asked curiously, "So what exactly happened on this terrace?"

Aya said, "Those who lost their lives in the war, no matter which side they had once stood on, needed some form of resolution. What Jiang Ziya had to do was give each of them a new place to belong."

Xiaoxi pressed, "Even his former enemies too?"

Aya deliberately teased, "That's exactly what makes this story so moving, want to know how he managed to treat everyone equally? You'll have to keep listening."

🐦
So how exactly did Jiang Ziya handle this?
After the war ended, Jiang Ziya was tasked with ascending the Terrace of Investiture, holding a registry that recorded the many souls who had perished in the great conflict. What he had to do was read out each of their names one by one, bestowing divine titles upon them and granting each a new role, such as governing wind and rain, or watching over a region of land.
📌 册封 (cèfēng) = to bestow a title
🐦
So how did he treat enemies differently from friends?
This is exactly what makes him so admirable, Jiang Ziya did not treat them differently at all. Both sides who had once clashed on the battlefield were now invited onto the terrace with equal regard, each receiving their own divine position. He believed that once the war had ended, hatred should dissolve along with it, and every soul deserved to be properly laid to rest.
📌 一视同仁 (yīshìtóngrén) = to treat everyone equally
🐦
What about Jiang Ziya himself? Was he given a divine title too?
Interestingly, Jiang Ziya bestowed every single divine position upon others, yet left none for himself. He said that being able to witness the end of this turbulent era with his own eyes, and to see so many souls find peace, was already the greatest fulfillment of his life. From his long wait by the Wei River to his solemn farewell atop the Terrace of Investiture, Jiang Ziya spent his life demonstrating what it means to accomplish something great without needing the credit for oneself.

Xiaoxi sighed, "So after waiting for so long, he ended up giving all the glory to others..." A-Ya nodded, "Exactly, and that's what makes Jiang Ziya's story so moving, true fulfillment sometimes isn't about standing in the spotlight yourself, but about seeing everything you care about find its rightful place."

Fun Facts

Did you know? Jiang Ziya was actually a real historical figure, whose birth name was Jiang Shang, later honored as "Grand Duke Jiang." He was a renowned military strategist and statesman in the early Western Zhou dynasty, and is traditionally credited with writing the Six Secret Teachings, one of the Seven Military Classics of ancient China, which had a lasting influence on military thought for centuries. The story of the "Terrace of Investiture," rich with mythological color, was an artistic addition layered onto real history by the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods, transforming a genuine dynastic transition into a grand mythological epic.
