Over a hundred years ago, a young British naturalist boarded the naval ship HMS Beagle for a five-year voyage around the world. Near South America, on the Galápagos Islands, he noticed that finches on different islands had beaks of strikingly different shapes, some long and pointed, suited for picking out insects; others short and thick, suited for cracking open hard seeds. This small observation would later completely transform humanity's understanding of the origin of life.

This naturalist's name was Charles Darwin. After more than twenty years of careful observation and thought, he proposed the theory of "natural selection": individuals within a species show slight variations, and those that happen to be better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing these advantageous traits on generation after generation. This theory was later published in a book that would change the course of science, On the Origin of Species.

Aya said, "On a group of small islands not far apart, he found that the same species of bird had beaks of different shapes. This seemingly minor difference actually held an important secret about how life evolves."

Did you know? Darwin had actually worked out the core idea of "natural selection" as early as the 1830s, but he held off publishing for more than twenty years, spending that time gathering ever more evidence. It wasn't until 1858, when another naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace, independently arrived at a nearly identical theory around the same time, that Darwin decided to publish his findings without further delay. In 1859, On the Origin of Species was officially published, and its entire first printing sold out on the very first day.
