In Journey to the West, on their pilgrimage westward, Tang Monk and his disciples encountered a mountain that burned with flames all year round, called Fiery Mountain, nothing could grow on it, and no traveler could pass through. The local people told them that only a magical banana-leaf fan could completely extinguish the mountain's flames, and the owner of this fan was none other than Princess Iron Fan.
To borrow this fan, Sun Wukong went to Princess Iron Fan a total of three times, and each attempt brought a different setback: the first time, he was nearly blown away into the clouds by the gusts from a fake fan; the second time, he managed to trick his way into obtaining the real fan, only to discover that fanning the flames somehow made them burn even hotter; it wasn't until the third time, working together with his fellow disciple Zhu Bajie and calling on heavenly soldiers for help, that he finally borrowed the genuine, effective fan and successfully put out the great fire.

Xiaoxi looked at a painting showing a monkey-like hero waving a giant fan, its gust of wind gradually blowing out a mountain engulfed in flames. She asked curiously, "Aya, why is this fan so powerful?"
Aya said, "This is the banana-leaf fan, capable of putting out even the fiercest flames in the world. But don't underestimate how hard it was to borrow it, Sun Wukong went through quite an ordeal just to get his hands on it."
Xiaoxi pressed, "It's just borrowing a fan, how hard could that be?"
Aya said, "This is no ordinary fan, and its owner isn't so easy to persuade either. When Sun Wukong went to borrow it the first time, he got quite a shock."
Xiaoxi asked curiously, "What kind of shock?"
Aya said, "With just a casual wave of the fan, Sun Wukong was blown thousands of miles away. But he didn't give up, instead he came up with a smarter plan and went back a second time."
Xiaoxi pressed, "Did the second attempt succeed?"
Aya deliberately teased, "There was an unexpected twist along the way, want to know how Sun Wukong finally solved it? You'll have to keep listening."
Xiaoxi sighed, "So borrowing one fan involved so many twists and turns..." A-Ya nodded, "Exactly, and that's what makes this story so moving, what's truly difficult to overcome is rarely just the obstacle right in front of you, but whether you're still willing to try a different approach again and again after each setback."
Did you know? Fiery Mountain isn't purely a fictional place from the novel, in Turpan, Xinjiang, China, there is a real mountain range also called Flaming Mountains, made of red sandstone that glows like burning flames under the intense sunlight from a distance. It's also one of the hottest places in China during summer, with ground temperatures sometimes exceeding 70 degrees Celsius. It's said that the author of Journey to the West drew inspiration from this very real mountain range.
