In the Enuma Elish, the oldest creation epic from ancient Mesopotamia, the world began as nothing but a vast expanse of primordial waters, the sweet-water god Apsu and the salt-water goddess Tiamat, whose waters mingled together and gave rise to the very first gods. As more and more gods were born, a great storm concerning the order of the entire universe began quietly brewing in the shadows.

提亚玛特被卷入了一场混乱之中，她的怒火化作了滔天巨浪，威胁着要吞没刚刚诞生的世界。众神惊慌失措，找不到人能够对抗她，直到一位年轻的神明站了出来——他就是马尔杜克。马尔杜克提出了一个条件：如果他能平定这场混乱，众神就必须拥立他为王。众神答应了。

Tiamat became caught up in a great turmoil, and her fury swelled into towering waves that threatened to swallow the newly born world. The gods were thrown into panic, unable to find anyone who could stand against her, until a young god stepped forward, Marduk. Marduk made one condition: if he could bring an end to this chaos, the gods must crown him as their king. The gods agreed.

Aya said, "This is Marduk, one of the most important deities in ancient Mesopotamian mythology. What he holds in his hand is the very weapon that helped him bring an end to chaos across the entire universe. Behind this lies an ancient legend about how order itself was born."

Xiaoxi pressed, "How did the universe fall into chaos?"

阿鸦说："这背后牵扯到两位最古老的神明之间的一场巨大冲突。故事要从世界最初的样子讲起。"

Aya said, "This involves a great conflict between two of the oldest gods. The story begins with what the world looked like at the very start."

小喜好奇地问："世界最初是什么样子的呀？"

Xiaoxi asked curiously, "What did the world look like at the very beginning?"

阿鸦说："只有一片浩瀚无边的原始之水。不过这片平静的水域，后来掀起了滔天巨浪。"

Aya said, "There was only a vast expanse of primordial waters. But these once-calm waters later rose into towering waves."

小喜追问："为什么会掀起巨浪呀？"

Xiaoxi pressed, "Why did the waves rise up?"

阿鸦故意卖了个关子："这场巨浪，几乎要吞没整个刚刚诞生的世界——最后是谁站出来平定了这一切？想知道吗？那就得往下听了。"

At the very beginning, the world was nothing but a vast expanse of primordial waters, the sweet-water god Apsu and the salt-water goddess Tiamat, whose mingling waters gave birth to the very first gods. But as more and more gods were born, a great conflict gradually began to brew, and Tiamat became caught up in it, her fury eventually swelling into towering waves that threatened to swallow the newly born world.

众神惊慌失措，谁都不敢站出来对抗提亚玛特翻涌的怒潮。就在这时，一位年轻的神明马尔杜克主动请缨，他提出了一个条件：如果他能平定这场混乱，众神就必须拥立他为王，掌管整个宇宙的秩序。众神答应了这个条件，把最后的希望都寄托在了他身上。

The gods were thrown into panic, and none dared step forward to face Tiamat's raging tide. It was then that a young god, Marduk, volunteered. He made one condition: if he could bring an end to this chaos, the gods must crown him king, to oversee order across the entire universe. The gods agreed to his terms, placing their last hope in him.

So how did Marduk finally bring an end to the chaos?

马尔杜克手持雷电之矛，迎向了提亚玛特汹涌的怒潮，经过一番惊心动魄的较量，他终于平息了这场足以毁灭世界的风暴。他将提亚玛特的身躯一分为二，一半高高举起，化作了天空；另一半沉沉铺展，化作了大地。就这样，浩瀚的原始之水第一次有了清晰的形状，日月星辰、江河山川，也随之各就各位，整个宇宙的秩序，就此建立了起来。

Marduk raised his spear of lightning and faced Tiamat's surging tide, and after a breathtaking struggle, he finally calmed the storm that had threatened to destroy the world. He split Tiamat's form into two halves, one lifted high to become the sky, the other spread out below to become the earth. And so, for the first time, the vast primordial waters took on clear shape, and the sun, moon, stars, rivers, and mountains each found their place, and the order of the entire universe was established.

Xiaoxi sighed, "So that's how the sky and earth were born..." A-Ya nodded, "Exactly, and have you noticed something? This story is a lot like the Norse creation myth we told before, splitting a body in half to form the sky and earth. Different civilizations, separated by vast distances, arrived at the same way of explaining how the world was born, without ever knowing about each other. That's one of the most amazing things about mythology."
