Over a hundred years ago, the word "machine" only brought to mind boilers, gears, and steam. But in 1950, a British mathematician posed a question so bold it seemed almost heretical: "Can machines think?" This simple question would later be considered the true starting point of the field of artificial intelligence.
This mathematician's name was Alan Turing. To make the abstract question of whether machines can think testable, he designed a clever method, if a machine could hold a conversation so convincingly that a person couldn't tell whether they were talking to a human or a machine, then that machine could be considered to possess a kind of "intelligence" in some meaningful sense. This method later became known as the "Turing Test," and remains one of the most famous concepts in the field of artificial intelligence to this day.

Xiaoxi looked at a painting showing a scholar sitting alone in a study, gazing at an old machine covered in gears, surrounded by a ring of glowing question marks. She asked curiously, "Aya, what question is this scholar thinking about?"
Aya said, "He's thinking about a question that almost no one had seriously considered at the time, whether machines could ever think the way humans do. This question seems simple, but it opened up an entirely new field of science."
Xiaoxi pressed, "Can this question really have an answer?"
Aya said, "That's exactly the hardest part, 'thinking' itself is hard to observe directly. This scholar came up with a very clever way to solve this problem."
Xiaoxi asked curiously, "What way?"
Aya said, "He designed a special kind of test. Instead of looking at how the machine works inside, it only looks at how it behaves."
Xiaoxi pressed, "How is this test carried out?"
Aya deliberately teased, "This test later influenced an entire century of scientific development, want to know exactly how it works? You'll have to keep listening."
Xiaoxi sighed, "So a simple question could have such a huge impact..." A-Ya nodded, "Exactly, and that's what makes this story so moving, truly great beginnings are often not a pile of complicated answers, but a single question that is deep and brave enough to ask."
Did you know? To honor Turing's pioneering contributions to computer science, the field established a special award called the "Turing Award," presented annually since 1966, and often called "the Nobel Prize of computer science." Winning the Turing Award is considered one of the highest honors a computer scientist can achieve.
