In the vast universe, is Earth really alone? In 1961, astronomer Frank Drake proposed a bold idea, an equation to estimate how many communicating civilizations might exist in our galaxy. The Drake Equation has no fixed answer, since several of its numbers remain unknown even today. But it turned searching for aliens into a subject serious scientists could discuss.

Since then, humanity has truly taken action. The SETI project uses giant radio telescopes to listen day and night for possible signals from deep space. The Kepler Space Telescope discovered thousands of exoplanets beyond our solar system, many sitting in the habitable zone just like Earth. In 1977, the Voyager 1 and 2 probes carried a Golden Record into interstellar space, engraved with sounds, music, and greetings from Earth, a letter from humanity to the universe, still traveling today.

Xiaoxi gazed up at the twinkling stars and asked curiously, Aya, the universe is so vast, do you think there are other talking neighbors out there besides us?

Aya said, who knows, but there really is a group of people who have spent decades seriously searching for the answer to that very question.

Xiaoxi pressed, so how do scientists actually search? They cannot just fly a spaceship around knocking on doors, right?

Aya laughed and said, of course not. They rely on telescopes, both to listen and to look.

Xiaoxi asked curiously, so if they really received a strange signal, would the scientists jump up in excitement?

Aya teased mysteriously, the answer to that question might surprise you.

Xiaoxi pressed, are humans only listening? Have we ever actively reached out to anyone?

Aya said, actually, humans really did send a letter out into the universe, and it is still flying, almost fifty years now. What does it want to tell the universe? You will have to keep listening to find out.

Aya, how do scientists actually search for aliens? They cannot just fly a spaceship around knocking on every door, right?
Haha, of course not. In 1961, astronomer Frank Drake proposed a bold idea, he wrote an equation that strings together questions like how many stars are in the Milky Way, how many planets could support life, and what the chance is that life evolves into an intelligent civilization, to estimate how many communicating civilizations might exist in our galaxy. This later became known as the famous Drake Equation.
📌 方程式 (fāngchéngshì) = equation
🐦
So what number did they actually calculate?
Interestingly, no one knows the exact answer! Because several numbers in the equation remain guesses even today. But scientists did not stop at just calculating numbers, there is a project called SETI that uses giant radio telescopes to listen day and night for signals from deep space, and the Kepler Space Telescope discovered thousands of planets beyond our solar system, many of them sitting right in the habitable zone, not too hot and not too cold.

So are humans only listening? Have we ever actively reached out to anyone?
We actually did! In 1977, the Voyager 1 and 2 probes set off to explore space, and humans specially placed a Golden Record aboard them, engraved with the sounds of wind on Earth, the calls of whales, greetings in many languages, and music, a letter humanity wrote to the universe. Today, Voyager 1 has flown beyond the solar system into interstellar space, becoming the farthest human-made object ever, and that letter is still on its way, still flying.

Xiaoxi sighed, so we are not just listening, we actually sent a letter too. Aya nodded, exactly, and that is the most romantic part of this story, maybe tens of thousands of years from now, someone really will pick up that Golden Record and listen to the sounds of Earth. When that happens, would you and I count as witnesses to history? Xiaoxi laughed, haha, then we would have to rename ourselves Operator Crow and Operator Magpie!
